Summary:
This project will continue your familiarization with computer architecture and organization by investigating
various aspects of processors, both past and present state-of-the-art devices.
This assignment follows the concepts and principles discussed in Chapter 3 of the course textbook.
Description:
Part 1 – For the computer that you use to perform your school work or other personal, non-work related
tasks, determine which specific processor is used. This is the same processor from non-textbook
assignment #3 part 1.
Describe the ALU that is used in this processor. List and briefly summarize the types (i.e., categories) of
instructions that ALU provided. Was the ALU integer based only? Could the ALU perform floating point
operations? Did the ALU have bit shifting? Did the ALU have boolean logic type instructions?
Your summary should be no more than three (3) typed single-sided, 8.5” x 11” size pages (1.5 line
spacing, 12 point, courier font) excluding references and bibliography.
Part 2 – For the Intel 4004
Describe the ALU that was contained in the Intel 4004. List and briefly summarize the types (i.e.,
categories) of instructions that ALU provided. Was the ALU integer based only? Could the ALU perform
floating point operations? Did the ALU have bit shifting? Did the ALU have boolean logic type
instructions?
Your summary should be no more than two (2) typed singles-sided, 8.5” x 11” size pages (1.5 line
spacing, 12 point, courier font) excluding references and bibliography.
General
You may cite references appropriately and utilize graphics (reuse is permitted and encouraged provided
that proper citations are included) in your submissions.
Along with your assignment submission, include a summary bibliography (and footnote/endnotes) of
Web/Internet references utilized. Include the URLs with each listing.
