If a large comet hit the earth, humans would very soon die out. If it hit the land, it would cause earthquakes worldwide, knocking down almost every building.
If it landed in the deepest ocean, it would send waves thousands of feet high over surrounding continents. A minimum of a billion people might die.
But Jupiter helps to stop such disasters.

The First Conditional real or probable future situations
If it rains, I wont go out
If + present tense, will + infinitive
Continuous and perfect tenses are also used in first conditional
If you are going shopping, will you buy me some chocolates?
If he’s had enough, he’ll stop

The Second conditional describes imaginary or unlikely situations
If I knew, I’d tell you
If + past tense, would + infinitive
In a more formal style we use ‘were’, not ‘was’
If I were you, I’d apply for the job
If he were here, what would he do?
