The solution to the problem
This is the product that you are being asked to design.
The solution to the problem
The problem is the reason why you are being asked to design a product.
The client
This can be a company, organisation or person. They are usually the ones who set the Client
Brief and have a problem that needs to be solved. To solve it they need you to design/create
something
The target audience
This is who the product you are designing is aimed at. It could be family, a child, a social group,
an organisation and so on. It is usually stated in your client brief. Knowing your target audience
will help you understand who they are, what they want and what they find attractive.
Needs and Benefits for the Client
Needs and benefits are the reasons you being asked to design a solution. These might be
mentioned in the Client Brief or are reasons that you will find by reading between the lines.
For the client you need to think about why they want you to design this particular product. For
example, the client needs you to design a new product because they want to expand, make
more money, and educate the public on an issue and so on. This could benefit them by helping

Needs and benefits are the reasons you being asked to design a solution. These might be mentioned in the Client Brief or are reasons that you will find by reading between the lines. For the target audience you need to think about why they would want the product you are designing. For example, they need the solution (the product you are designing) because they lack the time to make the product themselves, they need to take in new knowledge to improve their lives, the target audience may lack the skill themselves to make the product and so on. They benefit from the solution (the product you are designing) because it is more convenient for them to just go to a shop and buy it, they can make better informed decisions in the future, they will not have to learn to make the product themselves and so on. ISGR Power Bar Project MYP9 Food Design Task 1

Criterion A: Inquiring and Analysing

explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a

specified client/target audience

Read the marking strand above. You need to explain and justify your answers. You

must write about the need for a solution your client (ISGR) and your target

audience (your classmates) has. To answer these questions you need to use your

analysis skills and analyse the client brief. Make sure you read the client brief

thoroughly.

Explain how the ATL skills listed in the client brief can support your

progress in this project?

Social

The conflict/problem MYP9 is trying to solve is making power bars nut and sesame free, as other bars often contain nuts and sesame seeds and ISGR has a no nut and sesame policy. We discussed as a class the ingredients that we can use in our recipes. This is showing a little bit of Social Skills.

Thinking

We need to think about what ingredients to add and what ingredients not to add. I need to think about this because I have eaten a lot of cereal bars and I need to think about what ingredients go well together and what don’t.

Self-Management

Making sure criteria A,B,C and D are done when the deadline is, this means planning out when I am going to work on the criterion while still doing other school assignments. Task 2

Criterion A: Inquiring and Analysing

ii. Identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to

develop a solution to the problem independently

Research Plan

What will I Research? How will I gather the information? Why will I research this information? Date of research Primary Analyze recipes on bars without nuts and with nuts. I will find bars in grocery stores and look at the ingredients and taste them. I will research recipes on cereal bars with and/or without nuts. This will help me because I will get a better understanding of what ingredients make good cereal bars. 30/1/ Primary Analyze cereal bar wrappers I will observe cereal bar wrappers from the grocery store or sports store. I will research cereal bar wrappers from the grocery and sport store. This will help me because I will get a basic idea on what I should include in my design. I will look at things that will give me inspiration to attract students to eat my cereal bar. 30/1/ Secondary Cereal bar recipes Google (^) I will research cereal bar recipes. This will help me because I will know how to make a good tasting and looking cereal bar. 30/1/ Secondary Making cereal bars with no nuts. Youtube (^) I will research tutorials on how to make cereal bars with no nuts. This will help me because I will see what materials and 30/1/

Secondary research involves using data collected by other people.

Examples include:

Analysing data from a website or book

ISGR Power Bar Project MYP9 Food Design

Reading accounts of a problem written by another person

Analysing articles in magazines, journals and newspapers

Viewing videos about how to use materials, tools and processes.

Task 3

Criterion A: Inquiring and analysing

ii. Identify and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a

solution to the problem independently

iii. Analyse a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem in

detail

Primary and Secondary research

ISGR Website

You need to find information on the ISGR website about what food is permitted in

school. Visit: www.isgr.se and answer the following questions.

Who has decided to ban all nuts in schools and preschools?

The city of Gothenburg has decided to ban nuts and sesame in schools and preschools.

Why have they banned nuts?

Many children and adolescents are allergic to nuts, peanuts, almonds and sesame. These allergies are airborne and can trigger life-threatening reactions in people with allergies.

What warnings do they give?

They tell you to check the ingredients of foods you bring to school.

I learnt that it is good to flatten the mixture so once it is frozen it doesn’t fall

apart. There also want to be any holes in the bar so it looks a little professional.

Holes also makes the bar soft which makes it a little disgusting to eat.

YouTube , YouTube, 1 Sept. 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqspUDzr6Xk. Who has written/made the information? Gemma Stafford, who is a professionally-trained chef originally from Ireland. Bold Baking is the style she has developed over the years from working in tiny kitchens around the world. She now works at the Michelin-Starred restaurant in San Francisco. She seems to have a lot of experience with baking, as she uses strong words when she tastes her bars. Her set up for filming her videos is very good, the background is simple and the camera angle is good, this shows how much experience she has. What does the source contain? The video was uploaded to YouTube on the 1st of September 2016, Where you can find 3 recipes on different cereal bars. She shows the ingredients and steps very well so that anyone can easily follow it. What relevant information does it contain that will help you as a designer? What stood out the must in this video compared to other videos was that she flanted out the mixture when it was in the pan. Who is it written/made for? I’d say the audience is parents and teens, as it can get messy and children may not have the knowledge for what

some of the baking vocabulary is. But it is very much appropriate for children and anyone else to watch. Why was the information created? I think the video was made to help out parents when they’re making healthy snacks for their children, they will enjoy. She probably makes these videos because it’s fun for her and entertaining. She doesn’t advertise anything, other then her own website where you can find her recipes which is a very good idea. She's using her own knowledge and facts when making the bar and when tasting it.

Do you think it is a good design? Why? Is there anything you will take from the

design and put into your design?

I think this design is simple but good, because there isn't too much detail but a lot of text. The bar takes up half of the box and the text is on the other side. The background is simple but fits well with the yellow writing and logo.

Do you think it is a good design? Why? Is there anything you will take from the

design and put into your design?

I think this is a very good design because they kept the colors and images related to the bar and company. The color red relates to the fruits that are included in the bar. and Alpen light is the company that produces the bars from Swiss muesli therefore the alps are in the background. The way the fruits are placed beside the bar makes it look healthy and fresh. I’ll definitely think about including fruits into my final recipe, or with any other of my ingredients I can place them as done in this cereal bar box.
