Length: at least 3 typed, double-spaced pages
The Methods Section is your description of how data for your study will be collected. It should give
the reader enough information to replicate the study.
Your Methods Section will include:
I. TITLE PAGE - 3 points
Title of research project
Your Name
Date
II. SAMPLE (Label this as a heading) – 25 points
Specify the population studied.
Overall sample size
Whom or what will you study in order to collect data?
Who is available for study and how will you gain access to them?
Will it be appropriate to select a sample? If so, how will you do that?
Describe RELEVANT descriptive characteristics of the sample (averages, ranges,
total numbers).
Some include:
- Age (average and range)
- Gender
- Race
Were there any biases in your sampling method?
If there is any possibility that your research will affect those you study, how will you
insure their safety?
III. MEASURES (Label this as a heading) – 25 points
What are the key variables in your study?
How are they (your variables) defined (conceptualization)? (i.e. The conceptual
definition of cheating behavior . . . )
How are they (your variables) measured (operationalization)? (i.e. The variable
flirting behavior is operationalized through . . . )
Are your conceptual and operational definitions taken from previous research or did
you make them up?
IV. PROCEDURES (Label this as a heading) - 25 points
What methods will you actually use to collect the data for your study?
Will you undertake field research? Develop a survey? Analyze existing statistics?
Will you be using more than one method (triangulation)?
