Detailed Project Design Document (10 or more pages)
Due: At mid-term October 8, 2008, please submit both electronic and hardcopy to
me.
On October 8, 2008 or before, you are expected to submit a detailed project design
document to me in both electronic and hard copy to me. Please use Microsoft Word
2003, Windows XP or 2003 for composing your file for the assignment. You should
name your file ITEC4390F08YourgroupnameProjectDetailedDesign.doc. In here,
Yourgroupname should be your group’s name or you can use your last name plus your
first name. For example, if your groups’ name is GreenLand, then the file name should be
ITEC4390F08GreenLandProjectDetailedDesign.doc. Another way, you can use your last
name plus your first name in the file, for example, if your name is Jennifer Jones, then the
file name will be ITEC4390F08JonesJenniferProjectDetailedDesign.doc Please do not
use any other word processors like Microsoft Works or Word Perfect, I will not be able to
retrieve and view them. The document should be at least ten or more pages detailing your
roadmap of carrying out your project to completion. Please be noted that writing up the
Detailed Project Design Document is an important step in the project completion. You
will use it as a guide for moving your project forward until completion. Therefore, you
should take some time to carefully think through the process and document the details in
your project design document. You may want to break down the Detailed Project Design
Document into multiple sections, like the following (note: this is only a suggested
guideline, you should include as much detail as you wish):
1. (10 points) Project Description
When your project description, you want to include the type of project you are
intending to do (e.g. theoretical, practical or a combination of both), the scope of
project (e.g. an integrated comprehensive distributed system or a sub-system
within a bigger system), the problem that you are trying to solve in your project,
the functionalities that you are providing in your project.
2. (5 points) Target Audience: You should define the target audience (the people
that you want to serve) of your project
3. (5 points): Feasibility study and comparison of comparable products: You should
carefully evaluate the feasibility of completing your project in terms of time, your
ability and other resources required for your project. Report your confidence on
those. You also want to report the comparison of your project with other
comparable products on the market to justify your selection of the project.
4. A. If you are doing a dynamic website project, then please provide the
following info:
a. (10 points) Sitemap: Create a site map (e.g., tree structure of all the pages
in the website to indicate the relationships of different pages, you can
make the site map in Dreamweaver) depicting the navigational flow of

(5 points) List the functions that will be performed on each page (logon, shopping cart checkout, calendar etc). c. (10 points) Layout sketch of each page – draw the sketch of each page to depict what you will include in each page. d. (20 points) Detail info regarding your database that you are using in your project. It should include name of database, tables, fields, data type of each field. You should also include the info of which DBMS (Oracle, mySQL, MSSQL, etc) that you use in your project and justify your selection. e. (10 points): An ER diagram depicts the inter-relationships of the tables. f. (10 points): A flowchart of the dataflow of the inputs and outputs of the application. g. (5 points): Tools and resources: Please specify what tools that you will be using in your project including the hardware, software and other resources. You should include the following info:

  • Development machine (specify brand, model, processor speed, year make, ram, harddisk space, harddisk space left, and machine type: desktop or laptop, OS etc.
  • Development Software: Specify website authoring tools (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, MS Front Page etc), Server-side scripting technology (ASP.Net using VB.Net, PHP, JSP etc)
  • Other Tools: Touch screen, special hardware; commercial or Freeware software, please specify the name and purpose of each product and how you will secure those products.
  • Other Resources: Domain Expert (information of the domain expert and his/her expertise). Please specify your confidence of accessing those experts. B. If your project is not a dynamic website, then use the following as a guideline in your report: a. (10 points) Components: Describe in detail how many components that you will have in your project and the rationale of each component. b. (5 points) List the functions or tasks that will be performed within each component. c. (10 points) Layout sketch of each screen of your component to include what you will include in each screen.
  1. Any other pertinent information relating to the project.
