U2A2: Diction
Poem: Pacman
Once I sat engaged and chatting
I was gameplay and you a sport
Eagerly I looked for the arcade
The cartoony console cuddling
'It's that character,' I muttered
I crave the cartoony, courageous character
And its eyes have all the dimensioning
Death shall bring respawns
And the pathways never proposed
There stood an epic climax.
This poem was written from a personal lens and tone. I talk about my experience
with reconnecting with an old Pacman arcade machine from when I was five years old. I
attempted to use alliteration and other development methods to show my emotional
state for finally seeing Pacman again. I was trying to achieve a joyful effect. By my word
choice of “cartoony, courageous character” mixed with Pacman’s title, I hoped to show
the reader my attachment to this old arcade classic. The last three lines are related to
the game itself; if the reader has played this classic game, those lines will resonate with
them more than if a reader did not know of it. I left the title open to interpretation since it
was only meant to guide the reader to understand what “cartoony console” I was
referring to in the poem. Overall I believe with the use of literary devices; I was able to
convey a long-awaited joy from reuniting with the Pacman game. This poem is personal
since I am an avid gamer, and one of the first games I played was the Pacman game on
an old console in Europe.
