Compulsory Question [30 marks total]

(a) Describe in your own words the functions of the Address, Data and Control buses of a

typical microprocessor based system. Use a diagram to illustrate your answer. [5 marks]

(b) Draw the memory pyramid showing how each of the different memory and storage devices

relate to each other in terms of capacity, cost and speed. [5 marks]

(c) Name, and briefly describe, any 5 data types in typical computer systems and indicate the

type of applications they are most suited to. [5 marks]

(d) With the aid of a system block diagram showing a microprocessor and a memory device,

describe the memory write operation. Illustrate your answer with a timing diagram.

(e) Write an assembly language program to add the immedate number 27h to the contents of

memory location 27 10 and store the result in Bank 2, Register 6. Then place the contents of

the accumulator on port 2. Invert all the bits in the accumulator and send them to port 3

(You may need to refer to the Microconverter quick reference guide at the end of this exam

paper). [5 marks]

(f) Describe the sequence of events that takes place when an interrupt is asserted in an 8051

microcontroller, with particular reference to ISR vectoring. [5 marks]

Question 2

(a) Draw a simple schematic of a modern multi-core microprocessor. Your diagram should

make reference to the cores, caches and buses. [4 marks]

(b) What are solid state drives? List 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of solid state drives over

conventional hard disc drives. [4 marks]

(c) Explain in your own words how the architecture of a DVD differs from a CD-ROM to allow

it to store more digital data. Does this same principle apply to Blu Ray? [4 marks]

(d) Compare and contrast the Von Neumann architecture with the classical Harvard

architecture. Use diagrams where appropriate to illustrate your answer. [4 marks]

(e) How is cache used to speed up a modern computer system? (Your answer should include a

diagram of how cache is situated with respect to the microprocessor and main memory.)

How does the cache memory differ from conventional RAM? What are the differences

between level 1and level 2 cache? [4 marks]

Question 4 [20 marks]

Design an 8051 system and write an assembly language program to implement the following

system:

You are required to design and implement an embedded power monitor that accepts digital ammeter

readings and stores the results in memory as shown in Figure 1.

The system will interface with a 4 bit digital ammeter that outputs current measurements in amps

(from 0 to a maximum of 10 amps). You can assume that the system works with a fixed resistance

of 5Ω, so the resistance value can be hard-coded into the program. However, the current can vary

between 0 and 10 Amps, so you must implement the following equation in assembly language:

(where P is the power, I is the current and R is the fixed resistance of 5Ω). The system will read 4

bit current values (note that the digital ammeter automatically rounds off the current readings to the

nearest Amp) from the digital ammeter. The system should read the power every half second and

store the result in memory, least significant byte first, followed by the most significant byte

(remember that an 8 bit multiply can lead to up to a 16 bit result).

Your answer should include a a program flowchart of the operation of the system and an assembly

language implementation of the power monitor. State any assumptions that you make in the design

of your system.
