Reading Passage: From FOMO to JOMO
In our modern, hyper-connected world, many people suffer from FOMO , or the "Fear of Missing Out." This is
the anxious feeling that others are having more fun or experiencing better things than you are, simply because
you aren't scrolling through your social media feed. As Amanda Vince mentioned in her interview, this often
leads to an "automatic habit" of checking our phones even when we are in the middle of a conversation with
friends.
However, a counter-movement is gaining momentum: JOMO , the "Joy of Missing Out." JOMO is about being
present in the moment and not worrying about what is happening on a screen. It is the realization that you don't
need to be "always on" to live a fulfilling life.
Adopting a JOMO mindset involves setting firm boundaries . For some, this means designating "tech-free
zones," such as the dining table or the bedroom. Experts suggest that this practice ensures that our brains
have time to rest and recover from the constant stream of information. [Speculation] While the initial transition
to a digital detox can be "scary" or uncomfortable, many people report that it eliminates the feeling of being
constantly overwhelmed.
By choosing to disconnect, we aren't just "killing time"โ€”we are reclaiming it. Whether itโ€™s reading a physical
book, going for a walk, or having an uninterrupted conversation, the goal is to find satisfaction in the "here and
now" rather than the "there and then" of the digital world.
