RITALIN (methylphenidate)

Speed, west coast NOTE: Ritalin is a legally prescribed medication for treating Attention Deficit Disorder/hyperacti- vity, but is sold and abused as a street drug. Tablet crushed, the injected or snorted

  • Loss of appetite
  • Fevers, convulsions, severe headaches
  • Increased risk of exposure to HIV, hepatitis and other infectious diseases when injected
  • Irregular heartbeat and respiration
  • Paranoia, hallucinations, delusions
  • Excessive repetition of movements and meaningless tasks
  • Tremors, muscle twitching

Some children buy or steal the drug from their classmates.

HERBAL ECSTACY/EPHEDRINE

The active ingredients in Herbal Ecstacy are caffeine and ephedrine.

Referred to as the "date rape drug," Rohypnol creates a drunk feeling that lasts two to eight hours.

"SPECIAL K" (Ketamine Hydrochloride)

Vitamin K, new ecstasy, psychedelic heroin, Ketalar, Ketaject, Super-K, breakfast cereal Smoked or snorted

  • Delirium
  • Amnesia
  • Impaired motor function
  • Potentially fatal respiratory problems

Popular at raves. Used as an anesthetic for animals.

Heroin users quickly develop a tolerance to the drug and need increasing amounts to get the same effects or to feel well.

PCP (Phencyclidine)
