Definition A presentation is a means of communication which can be adapted to various speaking situations, such as talking to a group, addressing a meeting or briefing a team. An effective presentation is a key tool in business, education and a variety of other settings. It is important to develop and hone presentational skills in order to be successful and ensure that important information is both understood and retained. The most successful presentations focus on the audience. It is important to tailor the presentation to the specific needs of those attending. This might mean structuring the presentation differently for a group of high school students than for an industry conference filled with investors. Speaking directly to the audience and understanding their interests and concerns will ensure that the presentation and its content are better received. The actual content of the presentation should be concrete, relevant and interesting. An effective presenter will be clear, concise, organized and well-prepared. Provide information that is useful and provocative and will engage with the audience. States facts, include statistics and research, and be sure to include visuals and images that are catchy, clearly labeled, and reference the content of the presentation. Communication is also important. It is essential to speak clearly, professionally and confidently. Body language and other nonverbal cues, such as poise and eye contact, are important in effective presentations. Additionally, a presentation should use stories and examples to bring the subject matter to life in a way that is easily understandable to listeners. The conclusion of the presentation should be an effective way to summarize the information that was presented.
