An examination paper from the cork institute of technology, school of building and civil engineering, for the bachelor of engineering in civil engineering – stage 2 program. The examination covers the module 'structural engineering' (civl 6024) and includes four questions related to determining forces in trusses, calculating support reactions and moment diagrams for beams, evaluating centroid and second moment of area for irregular beams, and determining stresses in various materials under different loading conditions. The examination lasts for 2 hours in the winter of 2008.

Semester 1 Examinations 2008/
Module Code: CIVL 6024
School: School of Building and Civil
Programme Title: Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering – Stage 2
Programme Code: CCIVL_7_Y
External Examiner(s): Mr. J. Lapthorne, Mr. J. Kindregan Internal Examiner(s): Dr. R.A. Guinee, Mr. A. Conway
Instructions: 4 Questions to be answered. All questions carry equal marks.
Duration: 2 Hours
Sitting: Winter 2008
Requirements for this examination:
Note to Candidates: Please check the Programme Title and the Module Title to ensure that you have received the correct examination paper. If in doubt please contact an Invigilator.
Q1. (a) Determine the forces in each member of the pin-jointed framework shown in Fig.Q1. Indicate whether these forces are tensile or compressive. (15%)
(b) Determine the vertical deflection at node D of the truss in Fig.Q1 if E = 205 kN/mm^2 for steel and all members have cross sectional area A = 500 mm^2. (10%)
Q2. (a) Determine the support reactions for the beam shown in Fig.Q2 (a) and hence draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam noting all significant values. Points of contraflexure can be ignored in the calculation process. (15%)
(b) If the beam cross section is as shown in Fig.Q2 (b) determine the maximum tensile and compressive bending stresses in the beam. (10%)
