Semester 1 Repeat Examinations 2009/
Module Code: CIVL 6024
School: Building & Civil Engineering
Programme Title: Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering – Year 2
Programme Code: CCIVL_7_Y
External Examiner(s): Mr J. Murphy, Ms. M. Kyne Internal Examiner(s): Dr. R.A. Guinee, Mr. A. Conway
Instructions: Please answer FOUR questions.
Duration: 2 Hours
Sitting: Autumn 2010
Requirements for this examination:
Note to Candidates: Please check the Programme Title and the Module Title to ensure that you have received the correct examination. If in doubt please contact an Invigilator.
(a) Determine the force in each of the members of the pin jointed framework shown in Fig. Q1 using the method of joints. Indicate the forces on a neat sketch of the framework and show whether they are tensile or compressive. (17%)
(b) If the above truss has an additional gravity load of 5kN at node C evaluate the forces in members 2, 3 and 4 using the method of sections (8%) [25%]
Q2 (a) Determine the support reactions for the beam shown in Fig.Q2 (a) and hence draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam noting all significant values. Ignore point of contra-flexure. (15%) (b) If the beam cross section is as shown in Fig.Q2 (b) determine the maximum tensile and compressive bending stresses in the beam. (10%)
