๐Ÿ”Œ CHAPTER 12: ELECTRICITY

1. ELECTRIC CHARGE

โžข Definition: A property of matter due to which it experiences electrical and magnetic effects. โžข Symbol: ๐‘„ โžข SI Unit: Coulomb (C)

QUES :- Where is the charge found?

โžข In elementary particles: โ— Electron: Negative charge (โ€“) โ— Proton: Positive charge (+) โ— Neutron: Neutral โžข All matter in the universe is made of atoms, which contain these particles.

Charge conversions:1 mC=10^(-3)C [MILI COULOMB] 1 ๐œ‡ C=10^(โˆ’6)C [MICRO COULOMB]

QUES :- How does a body become charged?

โžข By disturbing the neutrality of an atom, charged particles can be created. โžข Just like ions are created out of neutral atom. โ— Loss of electrons โ†’ Positive charge โ— Gain of electrons โ†’ Negative charge

2. QUANTIZATION OF CHARGE

NOTE :- Free electrons move when a potential difference is applied.

5. POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE (V)

โžข Definition: Work done to move a unit positive charge from one point to another. โžข Formula: ๐‘‰=๐‘Š๐‘„ โžข Symbol: ๐‘‰ โžข Unit: Volt (V) โžข 1 Volt: 1 Joule per Coulomb

6. ELECTRIC CIRCUIT

โžข Closed path through which current flows. โžข Includes devices like bulb, switch, ammeter, cell, resistor, etc.

7. OHMโ€™S LAW

โžข Statement: Current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to potential difference applied across the conductor at a particular temperature. โžข ๐ผโˆ๐‘‰ or ๐‘‰=๐ผ๐‘…, Where ๐‘… is constant.

8. FACTORS AFFECTING RESISTANCE

โ˜… Length (l)(In metre): ๐‘…โˆ๐‘™. โ˜… Area (A)(in metre^2): ๐‘…โˆ1/๐ด โ˜… Material: Different materials have different resistivity ๐œŒ (ฮฉ metre). โ˜… Temperature: ๐‘… increases with temperature.

9. SERIES CIRCUIT vs PARALLEL CIRCUIT

SERIES CIRCUIT PARALLEL CIRCUIT

๐‘…(total) =๐‘…1+๐‘…2+๐‘… 3 1/๐‘…(total) =1/๐‘…1+1/๐‘…2+1/๐‘… 3

Current ๐ผ is same through all resistors

Voltage ๐‘‰ is same across each branch Voltage divides. Current divides .

10. HEATING EFFECT OF CURRENT

โ– JOULEโ€™S LAW OF HEATING States that, Heat produced in a conductor is directly proportional to:Square of current ๐ผ;Resistance ๐‘…;Time ๐‘ก โ– Jouleโ€™s Law of Heating: ๐ป=๐ผ^2๐‘…๐‘ก

โ– Applications:

โžข Bulbs: Tungsten used due to high melting point. โžข Fuses: Melts when excessive current flows. โžข Heaters, irons, geysers, etc.,.

11.ELECTRIC POWER

โž” Statements :- rate at which electrical energy is consumed in circuit. โž” Formula: ๐‘ƒ=๐‘‰๐ผ
