My excellent element is called ________________________________.

Its symbol on the periodic table is ___________.

This element’s standard state is ____________________.

solid, liquid, or gas

3 Fabulous facts about my element are:

The smallest particle of this element is called an atom.

Atoms of my element can combine with other atoms to form molecules. Sometimes atoms of my element

combine with a different type of element to form special molecules called compounds.

One molecule/compound that includes my element is ____________________________________.

Its abbreviated chemical formula is ___________________________________________.

1. You may use any materials you wish (wood, Styrofoam, candy, marshmallows, etc.). You

may not use candy that includes nuts of any kind.

2. If it falls apart on your way to school or when I pick it up to grade it, I will not assume

you made it correctly. Craftsmanship is important! Make it sturdy.

3. The atoms of your molecule must be clearly labeled. You can use the symbols from the

periodic table. You can also use color coding if you wish.

4. You will not be graded on the angles of your chemical bonds. This is a topic that you will

learn about in chemistry. If you have the proper atoms and the proper number of atoms

connected in the proper sequence, you have done well!

5. Your model will be returned to you, but it will be at school for several weeks. Don’t

include anything valuable in your model.

I have included a 3D model of this compound. YES^ NO

I have followed the guidelines given on this page. YES^ NO

Marking Rubric: 50 marks

Total possible marks Mark obtained 3D – Model: All elements are complete. Most elements are complete. Some elements are incomplete or messy. Few elements are complete and it is untidy/messy.

Appropriate size. Too small or too large.

Project is structurally sound and will not easily fall apart. Project is not built well and will fall apart easily.

Colorful and correct use of materials. Plain and not much effort. Basic material e.g. paper made into a ball, no effort.
