Circumstances for a silent emergency ? - ANSWER-- If the officer is obtaining evidence
of a speed violation
- If the officer is responding to a call which the officer reasonably believes involves a
felony in progress:
1. officers presence may endanger victim/others
2. officer's presence may cause suspect to evade
3. officer's presence may cause suspect to destroy evidence or cause loss of evidence
4. officer's presence may cause suspect to cease commission of felony
Define pursuit as it relates to law enforcement. - ANSWER-"An active attempt by a law
enforcement officer, on-duty in an authorized law enforcement vehicle to apprehend one
or more occupants of a moving motor vehicle, providing the driver of such vehicle is
aware of the attempt and is resisting apprehension by maintaining or increasing his or
her speed or by ignoring the law enforcement officer's attempt to stop him or her."
This definition has four key parts:
1. The pursuing officer is on duty in an authorized law enforcement vehicle, making him
or her recognizable as a law enforcement officer;
2. The driver of the fleeing vehicle is aware of the officer's attempt to stop him or her;
3. The driver is resisting apprehension;
4. Vehicle speed may vary.

Distinguish among the various types of law enforcement driving - ANSWER-1. Normal Patrol Operations - must be alert and prepared to shift into emergency mode. Same traffic laws.

  1. Emergency response - Lights and sirens. Disregard traffic laws. Get to scene quickly as possible. But drive with due regard.
  2. Pursuits - Most dangerous. End in voluntary stop, suspect crashes, eludes the officers, or LE terminates the pursuit. Identify driving strategies used in basic patrolling - ANSWER-- Know where you are

  • Play "what if" - scenarios.
