An article is a determiner placed before a noun to indicate whether the noun refers to something
specific or general. Articles are among the most commonly used words in English.

2. The Indefinite Article โ€” 'A' and 'An'
Used before singular countable nouns when referring to something for the first time or to any member
of a class.
Rule 1: Use 'A' before consonant sounds
When the following word begins with a consonant SOUND (regardless of spelling):
โ€ข a book, a pen, a cat, a table, a dog
โ€ข a university โ†’ starts with 'yoo' sound (consonant)
โ€ข a one-way road โ†’ starts with 'wuh' sound (consonant)
โ€ข a European country โ†’ starts with 'yoo' sound
โœ“ I saw a dog in the park.
Note: 'dog' starts with consonant sound 'd'
Rule 2: Use 'An' before vowel sounds
When the following word begins with a vowel SOUND (a, e, i, o, u sounds):
โ€ข an apple, an egg, an igloo, an orange, an umbrella
โ€ข an hour โ†’ 'h' is silent, starts with 'ow' sound
โ€ข an honest man โ†’ 'h' is silent
โ€ข an MBA โ†’ abbreviation read as 'em-bee-ay', starts with vowel 'em'
โ€ข an X-ray โ†’ starts with 'ex' sound
โœ“ She is an honest person.
โœ— She is a honest person.
Note: Silent 'h' โ†’ vowel sound โ†’ use 'an'

1. What is an Article?

An article is a determiner placed before a noun to indicate whether the noun refers to something specific or general. Articles are among the most commonly used words in English. 2. The Indefinite Article โ€” 'A' and 'An'

3. The Definite Article โ€” 'The'

'The' is used when referring to a specific noun that is clearly identified by context, shared knowledge, or previous mention.

When to use 'The'

Situation Example Explanation Previously mentioned noun I saw a cat. The cat was black. First = 'a'; second = 'the' Only one of its kind The sun rises in the east. Only one sun exists Superlatives She is the best student. the best, the tallest, etc. Rivers, mountain ranges, oceans The Nile, the Himalayas, the Pacific. When NOT to use 'The'

  • Country / city names: Bangladesh, Dhaka, France (NOT the Bangladesh)
  • Languages: Bengali, English, French (NOT the Bengali)
  • Sports and games: cricket, football, chess (NOT the cricket)
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner (NOT the breakfast)
  • Institutions used for their primary purpose: go to school, go to hospital
  • Mount + name: Mount Everest (NOT the Mount Everest)
  • Titles used with names: President Biden, Doctor Khan

4. The Zero Article ( โˆ… )

No article is used in these situations:

  • General plural nouns: Dogs are loyal. (any dog, not specific)
  • Uncountable nouns used generally: Water is essential. / Music is relaxing.
  • Proper nouns (names of people, countries, cities, continents)
  • Meals: I had lunch at noon. / She skipped breakfast.
  • Sports: He plays cricket every evening.
  • Languages: She speaks Bengali and English.
  • Academic subjects: He studies chemistry and mathematics.

MEMORY TRICK: A = Any; An = Any (vowel sound); The = That specific one; โˆ… = All in general

  • Hear the next sound, not the letter โ€” 'a university', not 'an university'
  • First mention = 'a/an'; second mention = 'the'
  • One-of-a-kind things always take 'the'
  • If you can count it and it's singular and first-mentioned โ†’ use a/an
  • Sports, meals, languages, school subjects, countries = no article
  • Rivers, oceans, mountain ranges, deserts = use 'the'
