Exposé anglais Stone Cold

(p.73-82)

Summary :

Shelter has a plan to catch and kill Link and Ginger, that he calls « Laughing Boy

One ». He learns by heart their names to execute his plan correctly. He wants to wait

that they are separated because if they are together, he can't catch them. So, he

follows Ginger and Link until they separate. After a while, they parted at the station.

Ginger goes to Camden and Link stay in the High-street to beg. Shelter wait that

Ginger cames back at the station and he can see Link wait to. It starts to get late, so

Link falls asleep. While this time, Ginger goes out the station and Shelter glimpses

his target, Ginger. Shelter interpelate Ginger by asking if he is Link's mate because he

would like to tell him that he's responsable of Link's accident. Link is badly hurt so

Shelter brought his home. Ginger is shocked, worried after the announcement and a

little bit mefiant because he finds that very strange but he is too worried so he follows

Shelter. Shelter prepared a sofa with a blanket stained with blood like as if a person is

underneath. When Ginger see that he percipitates towards what he belives be link and

it's there that Shelter kills him. After that he goes to the High-street for do the same

trick to Link but he isn't there.

The next day, he spends his time to look for Ginger but he doesn't find him. Link miss

so much Ginger that he saw him everywhere and he heards voices who called Ginger.

He asks if Ginger is in a hospital, unconscious somewhere, or he's lost his memory.

He questions a guy about Ginger. The guy say to Link that he saw Ginger with a man

speake about certain Link who has an accident . Link is suprised because he doesn't

have an accident.

He sees Ginger's friend, called Toya. He speakes with her about Ginger's disppartion.

She says to Link that Ginger like that he comes and goes and says to him isn't sad

about that. Toya left without saying goodbye. After that reaction Link takes a

resolution : Don't attach yourself to someone.

He was in a Caffee and he sees a beautiful girl comes in it. The girl is a homeless

too. She sits down in the same table that link. They know each other and Link learns

Gail is homeless because of step father too. Link want to leave the Coffee for respect

his resolution but the girl holds him back. So Link doesn't respect his resolution.

Shelter misses his chance to get Link, because he went looking for boots and while

this time Link met Gale . Shelter gives a name of his victim's army « the Camden

horizontals »

Analysis : We have found two themes it's : The madness and the worry, the fear The madness : Page seventy-three line 1 : « Laughing Boy One. That was the code name of the exercise. » We can see it's like a game of to kill people for Shelter because he used the word « exercise » as if he didn't speake about the murder of an individual. Page seventy-three line 2-3 : « ... and now it's time for de-briefing » Shelter says that as if it was an ordinary day, as if he is going to debrief a day of work. Page seventy-three line thirteen: « You remember I said a target must be alone. » We can see Shelter is incoherent because he considers the homeless like inferior people but he doesn't can attack two homeless together. Page senventy-three line sixteen and seventeen : « The other srcuff-Link , he calls himself, though Stink would be nearer the mark » We can see Shelter kills the homeless because he despises them. We think it's not logic because we can't kill all people we don't like. Page seventy-four line 3 : « I nearly gave up but it's a good job I didn't... » We can see Shelter says that as if it was a real job to kill people and as if it was a normal activity. He used « good » to describe this job it shows he appreciates killing people. Page seventy-four ligne twenty-five: « I was magnificient though I say it myself » We can see when Shelter's plan arrives to term he is happy. Page seventy-four line twenty-seven : « And of course everything was a set when we got there. » We see that Shelter doesn't let anything randomnly and he want absolutely to kill Ginger. Page seventy-five line 9-10 : « Still, never mind eh? There's always tomorrow. Unless you're Ginger, I mean. » Shelter doesn't feel any emotion like sadness or compation and even not joy. He continued his life as if what had just happened was normal. Page eighty-two line 4-5 : « If I concentrated on Link I might have had him, but I didn't. Instead I went looking for boots » Shelter likes his victims more than kill them. This attitude is unhealthy and fanatic, it is scary but he takes in some way care of them
