“Guppy Farming and Aquascaping Shop” A Business Proposal Submitted to Dr. Lina Abogadie Graduate School of Cavite State University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Agricultural Entrepreneurship By: Sedano, Crea Criselda Madula (June 2022)

Business Name : “Couple Fish” Slogan : Fish Farming Starts with us. Type of Business : Partnership I. Introduction During pandemic, most of us have had to be isolated indoors with only our immediate families and hobbies to enjoy. As a result, most of us have been able to spend more time at home. From all indications, COVID-19 lockdowns have people who were on the fence think about an aquarium diving in and those already in the hobby spending time upgrading their tanks and spending lots of time tending to their fish as a welcomed diversion from the stress of being locked down. The lack of places to spend money combined with the stimulus money and tax refunds all coming together has provided a perfect storm for new aquarium keepers and that larger tank many have wanted for years. First started as a guppy hobby of Kenneth Sedano. He started out with a few fish and an aquarium, and have become so involved in this hobby that we wanted to expand upon it, turning his guppy hobby into a remarkable business. Guppies were his most favorite fish because of its attractive colors that watching them swim back and forth in the tank and their innately calming movement help him relax his mind. So, he started to learn how to breed them and in no time, he started producing excess offspring that he sells to aquarium hobby starters. He invested into making tanks and aquascaping. He had been fond of setting up aquariums into artful set ups called aquascaping in which landscape sceneries are designed underwater where various natural materials are used. His hobby become an inspiration to start a business and made profit out of breeding guppies because it is one of the more popular tropical fish for beginners to keep in an

Cross breeds of two different strains of guppies are also sold for Php 250 per trio. Culls or unwanted young fish with deformities, weak fish, and other issues are sold for Php10 to Php25 per piece depending on its aesthetics. Chopsuey Guppies or so called “chops” are sold for Php5 per piece. The name is derived from that of a Chinese dish in which an assortment of vegetables is stir-fried. “Chopsuey guppies” have mixed traits, such as tail size and color. Normally, every guppy is unique since harem breeding is being used on them. They are popular in pet shops because of their variety of colors and low price. Depending on how many guppies we can get, one can oversee a fast or slow start to the farm. A good amount would be to put twenty or so in each tank. Guppies reproduce relatively quickly so it won’t be long before we start having lots of baby fish and can start selling them among the community.

  • Dwarf Shrimp The bustling little dwarf shrimp suit almost every aquarium setup and even enrich plant aquariums and aquascapes with their colors and liveliness. The fact that they are also good algae eaters and take care of bio films, algic growth and fish food leftovers makes them all the more charming, and they have become very popular aquarium inhabitants. The shop offers two variety of dwarf shrimp: the red cherry shrimp and the blue velvet shrimp. Juvenile (“Juvy”) cherry shrimp is sold for Php10 each. Male adult-sized dwarf shrimps are priced for Php20, while female adult sized is Php 20. Juvy sized blue velvet shrimp is Php15 each, male adult sized is Php 20 and female adult sized for Php 30.
  • Aquatic plants Floating plants are used on the water surface of an aquarium. These are mainly used as hiding places by the offspring of fish and shrimp.

Aquatic plants are sold for Php30 per 5 stems. Usual price within Nasugbu area is Php50. We make sure that our price is budget friendly. Plants are also given as freebies for bulk purchases.

  • Fish Food PO1 Fish Food is a granule fish food for small ornamental fishes which is good for fish growth and breeding since it is high in protein. It costs Php50 per 50 grams. The fish food is already in a sealed pouch upon delivery.  Tanks- It is where fish keepers keep the fish. The following are the prices of tanks per gallon: 2.5 gallons (12L X 8H X 6W)– Php 5 gallons (16L X 10H X 8W)– Php 10 gallons (20L X 10H X 12W)- Php We’ll have less inventory of tanks because it is too fragile to keep in the shop. We’ll be more focused on customizing tanks and selling set-up tanks in a range of Php1,000- Php2,500 per set. This is an example of a tank which is just made up of a thrown ice chest styro box as the base of the tank. Kenneth Sedano had a piece of glass cut and insert it at the front of the styro box and used a glass sealant to ensure that the water won’t spill the tank. He cemented the whole styro box to make sure that the water won’t get through the tank. He let it dry for a

➔ BBS Fish Net- This is a very fine fish net use for scooping out baby fish or live foods and dropping them into the aquarium. It has thick plastic ring and approximately 30 cm long and the scoop is 3.5 inches diameter. It will be available in random colors.

  • Aquascaping Materials These are some of the essential items for aquascaping that will be available in the shop. ➔ Tank decorations - The decorative items segment in aquarium accessories market is expected to account for the largest share during the forecast period, and is primarily driven by the increasing popularity of aquaspaces amongst the hobbyists. Hobbyists are re-creating aquarium accessories based on diverse themes and are incorporating a variety of plants, ornaments, backgrounds, substrates, and related decorative items, in the tanks. This seller offers the most budget friendly aquarium decorations. It has Spongebob themed decorations, pirate ships, plastic ornamental plants and castles which may complete anyone’s tank for less than Php200 each. ➔ Driftwoods- Driftwood makes fish feel at home. Using driftwood in aquascape helps in creating a replica of the natural environment where the fish are found in the wild. In their natural habitat, fish use driftwood to hide from predators, spawn their eggs and raise their offspring.

Nasugbu, Batangas has a beach nearby and Kenneth Sedano use to collect driftwoods from seaside. There are usually large number of driftwoods found on the seaside after tropical storms pass. Beautifully shaped and structured driftwoods could be sold for Php50-Php each. The wood was soaked in water for one week to release remaining tannins and salt from the wood and set it out in direct sun for a week as well to kill any bacteria that may still be alive. ➔ Aquascaping Rocks- They help in building the foundation of an aquascape and they’re the perfect items for creating mountain range themes in a nature aquarium. These rocks can be found on rivers or on seaside and can be sold for Php50 to Php150. Just like driftwoods, it is washed thoroughly and let it out in direct sun. ➔ Aquascaping Substrates- It is the material that is used on the bottom of the planted tank. It can be rocks or sand. It is sold per 250 grams depending on the type of substrates. Small Lava Rocks- It is sold for Php100 per kilo. Small Black Rocks- It is sold for Php100 per kilo. Beach sand- A good rinsing in warm water will dissolve the salt. It is sold for Php100 per kilo. Small Lava Rocks can be used for all marine and fresh water aquariums. Lava gravel, black rocks and sand is perfect for creating a natural look and is suitable for freshwater planted aquarium use. Services

Guppies eat a lot of things such as algae, bugs, their own offspring, and mosquito larvae among other things, so it is okay to let them go without food for short periods of time. Since there will have a lot of them in a tank, it is still a good idea to feed them periodically. It is also a way of getting their attention to count how many there are. Fish food is available in the larger markets. PO1 fish food microgranules pellets is best for small fishes and newly hatch. It has high protein for the faster growth of the fish. Guppies are fed twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon. Bloodworms are an effective and easy way to supplement the guppies’ diet. They’re rich in protein, minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids. But they’re also calorically dense and should be kept to a minimum. Hence, it’s advisable to feed bloodworms occasionally as a treat to guppies along with their staple diet. Overfeeding bloodworms to guppies can cause health issues like constipation and other gastrointestinal problems. It can be found on the underside of leaves near bodies of water. Aquarium Lights A good breeding tank will also have lights installed. Lights will help guppy fry grow faster and be healthier. To achieve a faster growth rate for guppy fry, the lights should keep on for about 12 to 16 hours every single day. They are also good at replicating the tropical lighting that many freshwater fish had in their native environment and can sustain photosynthesis for aquarium plants. Guppies also need darkness. They need to sleep and rest for at least 8 hours. The constant lighting will stress out the guppies and they will die. So as with most of the things in life, there is a need to find a balance with aquarium lights. We'll be using DIY 12V LED strip lights installed above the aquarium since it consumes less electricity than other aquarium lights. LED lights do not generate the heat that incandescent and fluorescent lightbulbs do.

Aquarium Tanks Currently, we have four breeding tanks and we’ll be needing six more tanks (five main tank and five breeding tanks per strain of guppy). Three main tanks are in the living room of our house so visitors will be attracted to see the beauty of keeping fish at home. The other tank will be in the backyard. Additional tanks will be purchased on the second year of operation of the business because we'll be adding two more strains of guppies to breed. Trapond Trapond is a combination word for trapal and pond. This type of pond is affordable and easy to set-up. Most of the fish keeper here in the Philippines used this type of pond. This will be where cull guppies will be transferred. Nets The tannins from the leaves may turn the water tea colored, but this will not harm the guppies in any way. Since there is a big Talisay tree near the location and we are concerned by the mass of leaves falling in the tanks or the pond, we'll put a covering using nets. The net will prevent leaves from falling into the tank, as well as allow rain water to fill up the tank during the rainy season . Water Source We have a deep well in the area. It is very accessible and we just needed to fill the drum to be used for water changing and cleaning the tanks. D. Organization and Management The business will be managed by just the owners. Kenneth Sedano will be handling

that can adjust easily to minor fluctuations in water quality. However, we don't allow these fluctuations to become common practice, as they do cause some stress to the fish. I. Target Market and Marketing Strategies The target market for fish farming and aquascaping business services are household persons, hobbyists, fish owners and pet shops. Four P's of Marketing Mix The success of a business is largely dependent on the marketing strategies it adopts. Marketing strategies are the ways through which an organization engages limited resources to maximally use opportunities in the market and generate awesome profits. A good market strategy is one developed around customer interests.  Product There will be five strains of guppy that will be available: the Platinum Dumbo Ear, Half black and Blue (HBB), Full platinum blue, Dumbo Ear Mosaic, and Metal Purple Lace. More strains will be targeted to breed in the next year. The aquarium accessories inventory will be monitored so stocks won’t run out. Aquascaping materials are personally gathered aside from the lava rocks and black rocks which will be supplied by a supplier because it can only be found near volcanos.  Price Value Base Pricing will be applied to all aquascaping materials depending on the beauty of the materials that will be gathered. While nearby fish farm breeders mark up their prices for 50%, we'll mark up the cost of our products for just 30% The price of various categories of our fish shall be average prices and compete on quality and service. Our intended customers really make their purchase decisions mostly on price, so we are better off remaining average. Our credit policy shall be cash and will also

accept online payments.  Place The location is ideal given the farm and the shop is to be located in the vicinity which is just along the highway making it accessible for visitors. The location is behind a soon to open site of subdivision that is currently under construction. Possibility of commercial spaces beside the subdivision will be constructed. The location is near the intersection going to Lian, Batangas and Nasugbu Poblacion. While other competitors are located long distance apart from the Poblacion areas, our shop is on its advantage because it is accessible. Aside from nearby areas from the shop, we'll be offering our products nationwide through our Shopee account.  Promotion The easiest thing to do first is to sell the guppies to people who we know like family members, workers, students, friends, and the like, and then we can move on to complete strangers. The next step into introducing the business to the public is through online marketing. It is an avenue through which customers can be interact with. Through good pictures and messages on the internet, many individuals can be accessed. An existing Facebook private group called “Nasugbu Negosyo” where many small to medium business owners used to post offerings in the group. It has 18,300 members as of date. Many can see and respond to the posts and receives high volume of orders and purchases through the group. We’ll be taking advantage of this platform to inform nearby barangays and municipalities to look for our shop and see our offerings and services. Promotion consists of door delivery, installments, advertising and brand name. I. Financial Projections

On the first year of operation, we’ll start with five main tanks and five breeding tanks where guppy fry will be transferred. One main tank and one breeding tanks per strains to avoid guppies from cross breeding. Two canopies will be enough for the location space that will be covered with nets. Two traponds will be enough for the guppy culls. Fish food which will be consumed is assumed to be 50 grams per week. It is more than enough for the guppies to feed. The initial cost for all the aquascaping materials will be sub-divided to the amount of Php25,000. Monthly, we'll a lot Php5,000 to purchase more aquascaping materials. There is just a minimal real estate tax that is being paid for the lot. There is also a deep well as water source and the aquarium lights which will be used are LED lights strips which only consumed a minimal electric power. The aquascaping shop needs to hit a sales quota of Php1,000 per day on its first year of operation. With the mark-up of 30%, we are expecting to gain profit of Php300 per day 10 ₱4,000. 2 ₱3,000. 2 ₱2,000. 1 ₱1,800. 1 ₱1,500. 4 ₱200. 2 ₱10,000. 25 ₱2,250. ₱25,000. ₱1,500. ₱300. ₱300. ₱51,850. from the aquascaping shop. On the second year, we are assuming to target a quota of Php2,000 per day, and Php3,000 for the third year. For the aquarium-related services, we are assuming to gain Php1,500 per month from it on the first day, Php2,000 per month on the second year and Php2,500 per month on the third year. The business will be getting its return on investment on the nineth month of operation and will be yielding profit from the date onwards. (See Appendix A) II. Social Impact/Benefits for the Community Starting a guppy farm is a great way to accomplish several goals at once. Not only does it educate community members about the dangers of mosquito borne illnesses (malaria, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, elephantitis, chicungunya, and possibly more) but it also allows them to learn about how to control mosquito populations through preventative Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Aquarium Tanks $4,000.00 ₱1,600.
