Foundation Engineering Problem Set: Soil Mechanics and Consolidation, Cheat Sheet of Soil Mechanics and Foundations

Foundation engineering is a branch of geotechnical engineering which applies soil mechanics, structural engineering, and project serviceability requirements for design and construction of foundations for onshore, offshore, and in-land structures. Foundation engineering can be realized as an โ€œartisticโ€ approach rather than a routine procedure because well-designed and constructed foundations continue to perform efficiently during the lifetime of a project. The major task and goal of a foundation

1. A soil specimen has a volume of 0.05 m3 and mass of 87.5 kg. Given
๐‘ค = 15% ๐บ๐‘ = 2.68 . Determine (a) Void ratio (b) Porosity (c) dry unit weight (d)
Moist unit weight (e) Degree of saturation.
2. The saturated unit weight of a soil is 20.1 kN/m3 at a moisture content of 22%.
Determine (a) the dry unit weight and (b) the specific gravity of soil solids, ๐บ๐‘ .
3. For granular soil, given: ๐›พ = 116.64 ๐‘™๐‘/๐‘“๐‘ก3, ๐ท๐‘Ÿ=82%, ๐‘ค = 8%,๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐บ๐‘ = 2.65. For
this soil, if ๐‘’๐‘š๐‘–๐‘› = 0.44, what would be the
๐‘’๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘ฅ = 0.44? What would be the dry unit weight
in the loosest state?
4. For the figure shown, determine the total stress,
pore water pressure, and effective stress at A,
B, C, and D.
5. For normally consolidated clay layer, given:
Thickness = 3.7 m, Void ratio = 0.82, Liquid limit
= 42, and Average stress on the clay layer =
110 kN/m2.How much consolidation settlement
would the clay undergo if the average effective
stress on the clay layer is increased to 155 kN/m2 as the result of the construction
of a foundation.
6. Refer to the soil profile shown in the figure above. The clay is normally
consolidated. A laboratory test on the clay gave the
results given in the table shown:
If the average effective stress on the clay layer
increase by 50. a. What would be the total
consolidation settlement? b. If ๐ถ๐‘ฃ= 9.36 ร—10โˆ’4 ๐‘๐‘š2/๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘, how long will it take for
half the consolidation settlement to take place?
7. A consolidated-drained triaxial test on a sand yields the results: All-around
confining pressure = ๐œŽ3=30 ๐‘™๐‘/๐‘–๐‘›2, Added axial stress at failure = ฮ”๐œŽ = 96 ๐‘™๐‘/๐‘–๐‘›2.
Determine the shear stress parameters (i.e., ๐œ™โ€ฒ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘โ€ฒ)
8. A consolidated-drained triaxial test on a normally consolidated clay yielded a
friction angle,๐œ™โ€ฒ, of 28ยฐ. If the all-around confining pressure during the test was
140 kN/m2, what was the major principal stress at failure?
9. A consolidated-undrained triaxial test was conducted on a saturated, normally
consolidated clay. The test results are ๐œŽ3=13 ๐‘™๐‘/๐‘–๐‘›2, ๐œŽ1(๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘™๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘’) =32 ๐‘™๐‘/๐‘–๐‘›2, and
Pore pressure at failure = ๐‘ข = 5.5 ๐‘™๐‘/๐‘–๐‘›2 Determine c, ๐œ™, ๐‘โ€ฒ, and ๐œ™โ€ฒ.
10. For a normally consolidated clay, given ๐œ™โ€ฒ=28ยฐ, and ๐œ™ = 20ยฐ. If a consolidated-
undrained triaxial test is conducted on the clay with ๐œŽ3=150 ๐‘˜๐‘/๐‘š2, what would
