Introduction, Thesis Statement, and Annotated Bibliography The University of Arizona Global Campus GEN499: General Education Capstone Introduction, Thesis Statement, and Annotated Bibliography Introduction: Poverty and income inequality is the topic that I have chosen as I believe this is an issue that is no longer staying within national boundaries and is becoming a global issue. Impacting so many as we become interdependent on goods and services from other countries, it is important to understand and learn to be able to provide an insight into the cause of poverty or income inequality so we may work towards a solution. By furthering my knowledge on the topic, I can share and find representation for struggling individuals. Poverty and income inequality have greatly impacted the low-income, working-class, and middle-class populations all around the world. Developing countries as well as the developed, need to work together to accelerate the progress in reducing poverty (Bhargava, V., 2006). With the rise in the cost of living, the minimum wage does not meet the needs of those who are entering the workforce or those who are working to provide for themselves or their families. Thesis Statement: In 2018, there were about 38.1 million people below the poverty level and currently in 2021, poverty and income inequality are issues that challenge many individuals around the world. Focusing on topics that impact poverty and income inequality, such as affordable housing, tax reform, and local inequality, are ways to address the larger problem.

Bhargava (Ed.), Global issues for global citizens: An introduction to key development challenges (pp. 1-22). http://ebookcentral.proquest.com Annotation: In this book, Bhargava brings to light the global issues that individuals are facing all around the world and how our interrelations and intercommunications have made impacts on each other’s economy, trade, migration, and resources. Throughout this book, various topics are shown to play an important role in the issues that are affecting people in our country and in many others. Poverty and income inequality is just one issue among the many that are related to the widespread global issues that result in financial instability, food insecurities along with the need for debt sustainability. This resource provides insight on the issue of poverty and income inequality on a global scale, and how there needs to be more concern taken to each of the issues talked about in this book to be able to begin finding solutions to one issue specifically. The Introduction to Global Issues is a resource that I found very beneficial in understanding how countries develop economically and international trade have impacts on the citizens and growth within those countries as well as my own. Recognizing how access to resources and the demand for resources brings about jobs and growth in the economy as well as a rise in the cost of living and an inability to afford human basic needs are topics that are brought to the forefront of this book. Annotation: Within this article, Cleveland shares how the United States is having an increase in the homeless population due to the growing number of those struggling with poverty and housing insecurity. By taking a closer look at tax reform and policy along with wages, this article shares the statistics of income earnings by residents to the cost of living and looking at the debt to income ratio that is causing people to lose their homes as they can no longer afford to pay for their rent or mortgage as taxes and prices begin to rise. Cleveland shares a few different theories and models by David Ricardo and Henry George who talk about income, wage, and economic impacts that support or provide insight into her topic. This article provided information on how a change or focus on tax reform and aid in affordable housing could be one possible way to decrease the number of those struggling with homelessness and housing insecurity. Also, recognizing the income inequality in the United States as the wage gap provides those making a wealthier income the ability to impact those individuals who are making below the poverty line, causing the rise in taxes and affordability. Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy , 40 (1). https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=edsbig&AN=edsbig.A494741846&site=eds-live&scope=site Annotation: In this article, the author shares how economic growth through market access and the market system is becoming a crucial concept for the employed and those who are trying to build their own business. Focusing on how individuals or entrepreneurs are creating or putting themselves in debt as they are unable to find funds that are not
household compared to children in a high-income household. Bringing to light how policy changes and focusing on how income can have an influence on a child’s opportunity and outcomes is a topic that needs further research. This article does support my thoughts on how education is impacted by poverty and income inequality as there is a lack of resources and access to opportunities for those struggling with this issue.
