ON

GENERATION OF

COMPUTER

PRESENTED

BY

RABIN

PHAIJU

The history of computer is often referred to in reference to different

Generation of computer hardware.

Each generation is distinguished by the different advancement of

technology that fundamentally changed the way computers operate

with each new generation.

The circuitry has gone smaller, cheaper ,more power efficient , more

reliable and more advanced than their predecessors.

Vacuum Tube

Magnetic

Drum

Second Generation Computer (1956 – 1965)

Era of Transistors

Rabin Phaiju  (^) Vacuum tubes were replace by transistors.  (^) Magnetic tape were used.  (^) Faster ,smaller in size than first generation computer.  (^) Computer creates less heat and consume less electricity.  (^) Machine language & Assembly language were used.  (^) Computers still relied on punched cards for input and printouts for output.  (^) Example : IBM 7000, IBM 650, IBM 1401

Transistors

Third Generation Computer (1963 – 1970)

Integrated Circuits

Rabin Phaiju  (^) Development of integrated circuits.  (^) SSI(small scale integration) & Silicon Chips were used.  (^) User interface directly with an operating system computer through keyboards and monitors.  (^) Consume less power.  (^) High level language were used.  (^) Computer for the first time become accessible for mass audience.  (^) Example : IBM 360 and IBM 370

Integrated

Circuits

Micro-

processors

Fifth Generation Computer. Artificial

Intelligence

Rabin Phaiju  (^) Computer based on artificial intelligence , which are still in development.  (^) Some application such as voice recognition are being used today.  (^) The use of partial processing and super conductor is helping to make AI in reality.  (^) Portable and reliable with high processing speed.  (^) The goal of fifth generation computer is to developed devices that responds Natural language as input and capable of learning and self organization.  (^) Computer aims to be able to solve highly complex problem including decision making.  (^) Example : Nao
