Educational aims of the programme The primary aim of the MA/MSc degree is to provide an advanced foundation in geography, bringing students up to date with the latest developments in their chosen fields of study. The distinction between the MA and the MSc arises from the modules taken, with the MA awarded for degrees that focus more on human geography and the MSc awarded for degrees that focus more on physical geography.
On completion of this programme students will have attained a range of knowledge and skills appropriate to graduate teacher training and a career in secondary school teaching, or for further postgraduate study in Geography, as well as generic skills opening the way to more general employment opportunities for M-level graduates.
17. Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes
The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas:
Knowledge and understanding
The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following:
(a) The reciprocal relationships between physical and human aspects of environments and landscapes. (b) The concepts of space, place, scale and system and how these affect both physical and human processes and their interaction. (c) The importance of change in understanding the human and physical worlds, their interaction and interdependence.
These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies : Lectures, seminars and research project supervision. Additionally, practical and laboratory classes are used where appropriate. A variety of fieldwork opportunities are built into the programme. Additionally, students are expected to engage in directed reading and extensive use of the library resources (including electronic forms of learning materials).

Generic/transferable skills :
These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies : The development of generic skills is embedded in the range of learning activities comprising the Geography Programme. Specifically, the following modules pay particular attention to these skills:
[MA Geography] 7SSG5002 Practising Social Research 7SSG5004 Dissertation in MA Geography
[MSc Geography] 7SSG5110 Methods for Environmental Research 7SSG5000 Dissertation in MSc Geography
Assessment : See above for details of assessment
18. Statement of how the programme has been informed by the relevant subject benchmark statement(s)/professional and statutory body guidelines The ethos of the Geography Benchmark Statement explicitly acknowledges that given the breadth of Geography and ‘its value in providing a plurality of ways of knowing and understanding the world…institutions offering degree programmes in Geography must be free to decide upon the details of content and organisation’. We believe that the Masters Programme builds on the benchmark statement for higher qualifications and adds significant value to the undergraduate level programmes through both its increased depth and its widened skills. In line with the University of London’s guidelines on masters level programmes, much of the study has been informed by the forefront of the discipline. By the completion of the programme students will have shown “originality in the application of knowledge, and they will understand how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research. They will be able to deal with complex issues both systematically
