Biology 454, Winter 2007 Problem Set 2, Assignments of Entomology

A problem set from a university-level biology course, specifically for a class named biology 454, which was held during the winter semester of 2007. The problem set includes various questions related to insect biology, such as identifying insect orders based on images, understanding insect life history strategies, and describing the muscle/exoskeleton arrangement for insect flight. Additionally, there are open-ended questions that require students to apply their knowledge of insect physiology, behavior, and ecology.

The answers to the questions must be your own and should not be copied from the book, other literature, or
other students. Try to keep your answers to the space provided. Put your name on all pages
1. The Bio 454 web site has a set of insect images “Problem set 2.” For each image, give the order (not the
common name) to which the insect belongs. Use the classification summarized in the Appendix of your
book (6 pts).

2. Insects show 3 major life history strategies: ametabolous, hemimetabolous, and holometabolous. Which
strategy is used by each of the following? (6 pts)

3. Describe the muscle/exoskeleton arrangement that drives flight in most insects. Although insects
initially had two pairs of wings, there is an evolutionary trend to have a single flight surface (single wing for
flight or coupled fore and hind wings). How is this trend related to the skeleto-muscular system? (18 pts)

4.) Briefly answer the following : (30 pts) a.) What is the basic difference between the migration of a migratory locust and the migration of a monarch butterfly? b.) Termites need help in order to digest cellulose. Compare the strategies used by the lower termites (the most primitive forms) with the higher termites [the advanced mound builders]? c.) You find the body of a deer on the forest in September and recover larvae of flesh flies, hister beetles and Silphid beetles. You estimate that the deer has been dead for (a) 1 day, (b) 1 to 2 weeks, (c) many months. Select one option and give the reasons for your selection. d.) Give an example of how a parasitoid might alter the physiology of its caterpillar host. Why would this be of benefit to the parasitoid? e.) In the botany herbarium, you find a tropical plant specimen that has extrafloral nectaries. What would you predict about this plant in its home environment? f.) The figure shows the population of a pest over a two month period. As an economical grower, how many times would you apply pesticide over this period. Briefly defend your answer.
