INTRODUCTION

A social insect colony is made up of several different classes of individuals

  1. Queens: they lay the eggs
  2. Workers: they do all the work
  3. Drones: they mate with the queen

Major activities of honey

bees

Foraging is searching for wild food resources. For bees, their forage or food supply consists of nectar and pollen from blooming plants within flight range.

FORAGING

Foraging is limited to food sources within 3
km
Scout bees search first few 100 meters.
Bees visit up to about 40 flowers per
minute depending on floral type, nectar
availability and weather conditions.
In general, 5-15 trips.
Water collector may make as many as 100
trips per day.
When all of the bees—including the queen
—leave the hive in search of a new home
we say they are “absconding.”
 The primary reasons for absconding are:
 overheating,
lack of food,
and frequent disturbance.

ABSCONDING

DANCING

  • (^) Round dance When food source is < 50 m from hive
  • (^) Waggle dance When food source is > 50 meters away Waggle run- Abdomen wagging and wing fluttering in an angle.

Bees have the ability to air condition the hives. They do this by  (^) distributing water droplets throughout the hive.  (^) fanning their wings to generate air movement
