Human Experiences

Introduction

Human experiences are events that occur in your life whether they have

a positive or negative outcome.

Human experiences, including loss and belonging are explored

throughout the text, Vertigo By Amanda Lohrey. The experience of

overcoming adversity is shown in the short film Harvie Krumpet By

Adam Elliot

Belonging

  • Belonging is a human experience that is a focus in the text Vertigo. At first Anna struggles with country life and finds it hard to fit in. The symbolism of Anna taking up gardening to help her connect to the environment show that she is trying to establish roots to fit in. This gives her something to focus on and is a symbol of her attempting to belong to her surroundings. Whereas Luke refers to Garra Nalla as the “promised land” and connects to the environment straight away. Everyone experiences a sense of belonging differently and Luke and Anna are an example of this. The olives growing in this environment in which they don’t belong is a metaphor for Anna and Luke. Luke realises that “change is everywhere, and now he and Anna are a part of it.” and they must learn to adapt to their new surrounding.

Loss

  • Loss is another human experience that is explored in the text Vertigo. Anna and Luke moved to Garra Nalla to recover from the pain of losing their child. The symbolism of “the boy” being seen by Anna and Luke at times of happiness and joy is something that they don’t want to take for granted. The couple’s grief causes Anna and Luke to see the boy as they cannot let go but “his appearances were erratic and unpredictable.” The recurring motif of the boy reflects Anna’s way of coping with this experience.
  • The metaphor of Luke’s sweater which he wore when the boy died is a symbol of his attachment to the boy and a source of comfort. Ironically this sweater is what saved their home from the bushfires. All people experience loss differently and is individual from highly emotional like Anna to seemingly functioning like Luke even though he is grieving as he held onto his sweater.
