analogue - refers to the continually varying nature of some values that are input into
computer systems. data in this format must be converted to digital format before it can
be stored on a computer system
batch processing - invoves collecting data over a period of time and then proceesing
this data collectively at a convenient time. the batc is held as a transaction file and then
after processing the master file is uploaded
check digit - a digit added to the beginning or the end of a number to verify that the
number entered is a authentic code.
chip and pin - replaced the magnetic chip on credit and debit cards.
computer control - can process variables which are fed in; the output of the computer is
used to control the process. based on the principal of feedback
data collection - using forms and devices to collect data from a variety of sources
data logging - capturing data at regular intervals by a device such as a sensor. it is then
stored by a computer for analysing at a later point
data subject - the individual whose personal data is being stored and used. the data
protection act will guide organisations on the legal use of personal data
digital certificate - an attachment to an electronic message used for security purposes
digital signature - a digital code attatched to an electronic message which uniquely
identifies and authenticates the sender
e-commerce - this is a means of conducting buisness transactions over electronic
networks
feedback - this is a situation where the output can influence further inputs. it is used in
real-time processing situtations
hacker - a person who gains unauthorsied access to a computer system
information commissioner - the organisation who is responsible for reguating
compliance with the Data Protection legislation
interactive TV - a digital television that alows for two way communication
