Are entrepreneur born or made? Critically discuss.

Introduction

The question “Are entrepreneurs born or made?” has been an interrogative controversy for long as both opposite propositions are supported by a myriad of scienctific theories. Regardless of the endless confusions, my standpoint is that entrepreneurs are both naturally drived and educatedly formed. This essay will attempt to critically discuss the authenticity of the above stance. The first part is to identify how entrpreneurs are genuinely understood, followed by two reverse theses about born-or- made debates and their counter-arguments.

Definition & background

An entrepreneur is described as a person who is prompted to start a business on their own initiative in order to succeed. They are in charge of gathering all of the resources needed to fund the firm, as well as taking on any risks that may arise (Burch, 1986). To be more specific, according to a scholarly research, every threat is vital to evaluate while planning to establish a business. Being an entrepreneur means being ready to examine these risks and determine to take risk or not. Entrepreneurs play a key role in both the economy and society well-being. An entrepreneur is an innovator with fresh business ideas, products, and services which contribute to the growth of a country's economy while also creating job opportunities.

Body

Thesis 1: Are entrepreneurs born?

- What does “ born entrepreneurs” mean?

  • Genetic influence, innate drive

  • The inborn ability to learn things faster than others

Thesis 2: Are entrepreneurs made?

- What does “made entrpreneurs” mean?

  • Influenced by external factors: family background, education, work experience…

+Can be taught at schools or selft-made

+Benefits of education: understanding of the nature of entrepreneurship, fostering essential aptitudes, and encouraging of entrepreneurial identities and cultures at individual and social levels.

+Teamwork experience, interpersonal skills, leadership ability are key elements which can be acquired by learning not innate drive.

- Successful figures:

  • Daniela Witten, a physics professor: family environment can easily explain her background in science. Her company is now developing machine systems that can be used for cancer treatment, recommending products to shoppers and predicting election results.

  • Henry Ford was a hard-working man and eventually completed an apprenticeship with the Detroit Dry Dock Company. In 1891, he told Thomas Edison about his idea of the automobile and got Edison’s assistance for further career.

- Supportive evidences:

  • Becoming a successful entrepreneur starts with mindset, is built with experience and polished with education.

  • Kent et al. (1982) suggested that the entrepreneurs are most likely to fail without education.

  • According to a 2011 research by Ernst and Young, more over half of 685 company owners saw themselves as "transitioning" from employee to employer after spending significant time in the corporate environment. Moreover, 33 % and 30 % of them identified “experience as employee” and “higher education” respectively as definite

success factors. Reporters concluded that there is no entrepreneurship gene based on the replies.

Thesis 3: Counter-arguments

-If people are born entrepreneurs, why do we need to pay for colleges?

Although a college diploma is not required for entrepreneurship, attending college may be extremely beneficial since it provides soft skills such as ownership, accountability, time management, prioritizing, and social awareness. The college educates students not just academic subjects that might be useful in beginning a business, but also soft skills of how to be lifelong learners.

-Can entrepreneurship be taught thoroughly?

 Students at all levels of higher education have requested entrepreneurship as part of their learning, which has resulted in a significant increase in the number of entrepreneurship courses offered across all institutions over the last decade. As education authorities recognize the benefits that greater levels of innovative entrepreneurship may bring to our economy, many universities and institutes of technology are now offering entrepreneurship courses to students of science, engineering, and technology. However, some instincts cannnot be taught thoroughly in school curriculum. While entrepreneurial skills may be taught, studies have shown that the desire and motivation to start a business cannot. As a result, technical and commercial abilities alone are insufficient to run a successful firm and become a successful entrepreneur (Bhargrave& Shivganesh, 2008). To establish a business on one's own, one must be self-motivated and self-assured, with creativity and ingenuity, despite the risk of being overconfident in one's ability to locate chances (Burch, 1986). Because these attributes cannot be taught or learned, but rather imprinted, it requires a specific sort of individual with the right characteristics to be a successful entrepreneur.
