PROFILE OF THE HOTEL

ABOUT THE HOTEL AND ITS GROUP:

Marriott International, Inc. is a leading global lodging company with more than 6, properties across 127 countries and territories, reporting revenues of more than $22 billion in fiscal year 2017. Founded by J. Willard and Alice Marriott and guided by family leadership for 90 years, the company is headquartered outside of Washington, D.C. in Bethesda, Maryland. Fig: 1. J.W. Marriott, Jr. is Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Marriott International, Inc., the largest lodging company in the world. Mr. Marriott’s leadership spans more than 60 years, as he guided what was once a family-run root beer stand and restaurant to a global hospitality company. In September 2016, Marriott finalized its largest acquisition ever, acquiring Starwood Hotels and Resorts and bolstering the company to nearly 6,000 properties across 30 brands in 120 countries and territories. Mr. Marriott served 40 years as Marriott’s Chief Executive Officer, before stepping down on March 31, 2012.

HISTORY:

The origins of The St. Regis Goa Resort trace back to 1991 , when it was launched as The Leela Goa by The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts. Founded by Captain C.P. Krishnan Nair, The Leela Group was known for its luxurious Indian properties that combined local architectural styles with world-class hospitality. The Leela Goa was established on a sprawling 49-acre beachfront estate in Cavelossim, South Goa , nestled between the tranquil Mobor Beach and the scenic Sal River. With its elegant Indo-Portuguese architecture, expansive lagoons, and lush tropical gardens, the resort quickly gained international acclaim and became a landmark in Goa's luxury hospitality scene. Over the decades, The Leela Goa earned a reputation as one of India's top beach resorts, attracting both Indian and international travelers. It became especially popular for destination weddings, wellness retreats, and high-end leisure travel. The resort was praised not only for its design and natural beauty but also for its high service standards, fine dining, and curated guest experiences. Despite the growth of the hospitality industry in Goa, The Leela Goa maintained its elite status, frequently ranking among the best resorts in Asia. In 2021 , the property underwent a major transformation when it was acquired under a long-term management agreement by Marriott International , one of the world’s leading hotel groups. As part of Marriott's expansion of its luxury portfolio in India, the resort was selected to be rebranded under the prestigious St. Regis brand, known for its timeless elegance, 24-hour butler service, and refined guest experiences. The rebranding marked a significant shift, blending the property's original charm with the global luxury standards of the St. Regis name. After careful planning and extensive renovations to meet the brand’s elite specifications, the resort was officially relaunched as The St. Regis Goa Resort in October 2022. The transformation included redesigned interiors, elevated service offerings, curated rituals like the daily champagne sabrage, and the introduction of signature St. Regis experiences such as personalized butler service for all guests. The property retained its lush landscape, lagoon system, and Indo-Portuguese influence, preserving the essence of the original Leela Goa while elevating the overall guest experience to an ultra-luxury level.

INTRODUCTION TO GOA:

The annual Carnival, Shigmo festival, and Christmas celebrations reflect the state’s multicultural heritage and offer tourists a glimpse of Goa’s festive spirit. Agriculture, fishing, and mining also contribute to the local economy, with Goa being one of India’s leading producers of iron ore. Goa’s population is culturally diverse, with a harmonious mix of Hindus, Christians, and Muslims living together. Konkani is the official language, while Marathi, English, and Portuguese influences are also evident in everyday life. The cuisine of Goa is another highlight, combining traditional Indian flavors with Portuguese influences to create unique dishes. Seafood dominates the menu, with specialties like Goan fish curry, vindaloo, sorpotel, and xacuti. The use of coconut, kokum, and local spices adds distinctive tastes and aromas. Traditional Goan sweets like bebinca and dodol are also famous. Beyond leisure and tourism, Goa has evolved into a hub for music and arts, with numerous music festivals, art shows, and cultural performances held throughout the year. The state is particularly famous for its electronic dance music scene and the internationally acclaimed Sunburn Festival, which attracts global artists and partygoers. Climate-wise, Goa enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with hot summers, heavy rains during the monsoon season from June to September, and mild, pleasant winters from November to February. This weather pattern supports the lush vegetation and spice plantations that thrive in the region. In conclusion, Goa is much more than just a beach destination; it is a vibrant state rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Its blend of Indian and Portuguese heritage, coupled with its warm hospitality and diverse attractions, make it a unique and cherished place for travelers and locals alike.

Goa’s appeal lies in its unique combination of natural beauty, cultural diversity, and historical richness. The pristine beaches, lush greenery, and tropical climate offer a perfect setting for relaxation and recreation. The coastal belt, stretching over 100 kilometers, features a variety of beaches ranging from lively and bustling ones like Baga and Calangute to quieter, serene beaches such as Palolem and Agonda, catering to different types of tourists. The state’s colonial heritage, especially its Portuguese influence, adds a distinctive charm to the tourism experience. Visitors are drawn to the well-preserved churches, forts, and old Portuguese-style houses, with the UNESCO World Heritage-listed churches of Old Goa standing out as major tourist attractions. Festivals and cultural events such as the Goa Carnival, Shigmo, and the Feast of St. Francis Xavier also attract large crowds and showcase the state’s rich traditions.
