Q1 (a) Compare and contrast microprocessors and micro-controllers. What advantages, disadvantages does each have? [8 marks]

(b) You have the following selection of micro-processors/micro-controllers available to you for a number of projects: (i) Motorola 68000 based embedded processor(68332 ), (ii) Intel Core 2 x86 Processor, (iii) Microchip PIC 16F74. (iv) 8051 8-bit Microcontroller

Outline 4 categories you would examine each application under to determine its

need for a micro-processor/micro-controller. [8 marks]

Then for each of the following application choose one and say why you think it is appropriate to that application.

 Dishwasher control panel with an LCD screen.  Automobile On-Board Computer controlling Ignition, traction and ABS  Computer for use at an Internet Kiosk at an airport. [8 marks] (c) The PIC 16c74 arranges its memory into two register banks. What advantages/disadvantages does this have? How do you control which register bank is addressed/selected at any time? [10 marks] [Total: 34 marks]

Q4 (a) What peripheral device is used on the PIC to achieve a Serial Data interface? How would this be configured to give an asynchronous serial interface at 14400 baud? Calculate the baud rate generator configuration value and show how it would be loaded. What is the percentage error in the final baud rate? [8 marks]

Explain one of the following, naming the registers and pins used.  How it transmits data serially. or  How it receives data serially. [8 marks]

(b) Describe how a LCD Display unit can be connected to a micro-processor/micro- controller and used to display text. Describe the input signals necessary for the LCD unit and how a micro-processor can supply these. Provide sample code to show how the LCD control can be done, paying particular attention to the slowness of the LCD unit. [18 marks] [Total: 34 marks]
