Q1 (a) Compare and contrast microprocessors and micro-controllers. What advantages, disadvantages does each have? [9 marks]

(b) You have the following selection of micro-processors/micro-controllers available to you for a number of projects: (i) Motorola 68000 based embedded processor (68332 ), (ii) Intel Core 2 x86 Processor, (iii) Microchip PIC 18f452. (iv) 8051 8-bit Microcontroller.

Outline 4 categories/requirements you would examine each application under

to determine its need for a micro-processor or micro-controller. [8 marks]

Then for each of the following application choose one and say why you think it is appropriate to that application.  Untrasonic measuring unit which displays on a small screen.  ATM cash dispenser which can double as on-line banking kiosk.  Microwave oven with digital timer and programmer. [9 marks] (c) Describe your understanding of the memory configuration and usage in the PIC18f452 micro-controller. You should discuss how the program memory is organised and how the data memory is organised and what is kept in each part or memory. [8 marks] [Total: 34 marks]

Q3 (a) Describe the capabilities and operation of the Analog to Digital Converter Unit of the Microchip PIC, explaining. i. The possible input signal levels. ii. The number of possible inputs iii. The possible output values. iv. Key registers used both in the configuration. v. Key registers during the operation. vi. How does one know a conversion has completed? [14 marks]

(b) Write the configuration, interrupt handling and data reading sections of a PIC assembly language program for the 18f452 micro-controller, which continually reads in an analogue voltage from 0 -> 5V on RA2 and outputs it in binary format on PORTC. [20 marks] [Total: 34 marks]

Q4 (a) What peripheral device is used on the PIC to achieve a Serial Data interface? How would this be configured to give an asynchronous serial interface at 9600 baud? Calculate the baud rate generator configuration value and show how it would be loaded. What is the percentage error in the final baud rate? [8 marks]

Explain one of the following, naming the registers and pins used.  How it transmits data serially. or  How it receives data serially. [8 marks]

(b) Describe, using diagrams, the principle of how a 16 key-keypad can be read from a micro-controller/micro-processor. How many input/outputs are needed and provide an example of how a particular key press (no 4) would be determined and identified. You should explain the algorithm to determine which key has been pressed with a flowchart. [18 marks] [Total: 34 marks]
