What is a “meme”?

  • “a unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena” (Wikipedia)
  • First coined by Richard Dawkins in his book, The Selfish Gene when discussing how ideas and cultural references are themselves subject to a form of evolution and natural selection

The lifecycle of an internet meme

  • Someone sends something to a group of people on the internet
  • Examples:
    • Rickrolling
    • “All your base are belong to us”
    • Snakes on a Plane
    • Nyan Cat
    • Lolcats / Cat macros
  • Many, many, many more!
    • See knowyourmeme.com or memebase

The lolcat meme

The lolcat meme

  • Lolcats speak lolspeak
    • speaklolspeak.com
  • …and code in lolcode
    • lolcode.com

HAI CAN HAS STDIO? VISIBLE "HAI WORLD!" KTHXBYE

lolcats.com v icanhascheezburger

  • Site name and memeology
    • Memes, by definition, are what stick in people’s head – they remembered the cat, the picture and the phrase “I can has cheezburger”
    • In contrast, not everyone knew the neologism “lolcat” – there are alternative terms such as “cat macros”, or even ad-hoc descriptions i.e. “funny cat pictures”

  • Community
    • ICHC’s original authors emphasised the community aspect - Ratings, facilities built into the site to create new captioned pics, discussion boards, other features - “We basically have a playground where people keep coming to play” * - “it’s like you’re creating a story supplied by people in the community, and then [they] supply the next part of the story” *
    • In contrast, lolcats.com mostly ignored this aspect
      • Their comments/discussion feature was mostly an afterthought (and still is)
      • They also expect submitters to manually add captions (e.g. using Photoshop, etc)

So… what have we learned?

  • Making money from the internet is

EASY

  • Start small
  • Don’t be afraid if the idea is a bit off-

the-wall – in fact embrace that

  • Memes for fun and profit
