CORRESPONDEN CE truth based on correspond to reality or actual state of affair. PRAGMATIC truth based on the OPINION A statements of judgement of a person.

ARGUMENT It is a statement consist of Ideas and claims to be presented. AD HOMINEM Attacking person making the argument instead of the argument itself.

Direction: Write the letter “T” if the statement is Truth and “O” if the statement is Opinion. Write your answer in your notebook.

Determining Truth

HOW CAN WE DISTINGUISHED TRUTH FROM OPINION? THE SUN IS THE CENTER OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM. I BETTER PREPARED ICE CREAM THAN CHOCOLATES.

The nature of Truth and Opinion

CHARACTERISTI CS TRUTH OPINION Basis Evidence, facts, reality. (Truth are opinion validated by facts, evidences, observation, and experimentation) Personal feelings, beliefs, experiences. (Opinion are often contain clue words such as I think, I feel, and I believe) Universality Remains constant universally. Can vary among individuals. Validation Can be independently verified. Not necessarily based on facts. Role in Communication Provides objective information. Offers subjective perspectives.

THE THEORIES OF TRUTH

Correspondence theory of Truth

State that something is true if it correspond to reality or the actual state of affair. This theory assumes a direct relationship between an idea and reality to be able to take a statement as “facts”. Example: The dog barks The ghost in the old house

Coherence theory of Truth

Proposes that something is true if it makes sense when placed in certain situation or context. Based on this theory, there is a possibility that there will be varied “truths” from different perspective. Example: Muslim have a belief that certain animals like pigs are unclean.
