4.03 Attitude Teamwork and collaboration. Transcript (CO1, CO2, CO4, WO1 to
WO6)
“I invite everyone to choose forgiveness rather than division, teamwork over
personal ambition.” - Jean-Francois Cope
Improving nurse attitude toward teamwork and collaboration includes:
Self-reflecting to acknowledge your strength in being a team member
Appreciate in unit collaboration with staff and patients
Value interprofessional collaboration
Value the views of all others including patients
Align the patient/family as core team members
Respect the unique attributes members bring to the team
Understand the value of teams to patient outcomes and nurse job
satisfaction
Communicate with the audience and respect their communication style
Resolve conflicts effectively
Eliminate risks in transition of care
Trust is a key element required for successful teamwork. Teamwork also
improves caring for both other staff and patients. Teamwork and collaboration
also can improve patient outcomes, reduce medical errors, improve staff
efficiency, and improve patient and staff satisfaction.
Karlsen et al. (2022) did a 26 month longitudinal study of teamwork training for
423 RN-BSN nursing students in a Norwegian Bachelor of Nursing program
using the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient
Safety (TeamSTEPPS®). The TeamSTEPPS had a positive impact on nursing
students' attitudes toward teamwork. An attitude survey, the Norwegian version
of the TeamSTEPPS® Teamwork Attitude Questionnaire (T-TAQ), was given pre
training, and at 10 months and 24 months post intervention. The study showed at
both post-survey points the nurses improved their attitude towards teamwork.
The authors suggest future studies including if it improves patient safety.
Iwanow et al. (2021) did a study on a specialist training course taken by 1010
Polish RNs in 2018, that focused on the participants attitude towards
communication skill competence. Three survey instruments were used: the NEO-
PI-R questionnaire, the Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS), and the
Empathy Understanding Questionnaire (KRE II). The study findings supported
that competence in communication skills is improved with professional
experience, use of empathy, and agreeableness. The study showed that the
nurse attitude toward acquiring improved skills in communication was multi-
dimensional and may also be influenced by other elements such as work
conditions and mentor support.

Kaifi et al. (2021) did a study in Pakistan of 374 nurses and physicians to determine the differences in attitude towards interprofessional collaboration (IPC). The study used the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes toward Physician–Nurse Collaboration (JSAPNC), 15 questions, that measure teamwork attitude in four areas: teamwork in education, caring versus curing, nurse autonomy, and physician dominance. Nurses had better scores that physicians in all four areas. It may be that the “master-handmaiden” relationship needs to be changed first. Team-based care improvement would improve quality, job satisfaction, and reduce cost of care. Grosser et al. (2021) did a study showing that interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in the medical field should be taught as early as possible in undergraduate medical education as it is an important factor for good clinical outcomes. Experiencing IPC is a great teacher. Watching a video of successful IPC was also successful in increasing knowledge and attitude towards ICP with 75 medical students and thirty-eight physiotherapy students. Observing IPC can be the first step before experiencing ICP and provide a good foundation for knowledge about ICP and gaining an improved attitude of ICP.
