PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUNDCHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

We all know that flower is a necessity in agriculture where in if a plant blooms one, it shows that it is healthy and ready to bear fruits. But one usage for flowers are for decorative purposes. Aesthetic is one word that can describe a flower in terms of beauty and art. For art, arranging a bouquet of flowers shows a handicraft of perfection so that is why flowers is considered aesthetic. Thus, making many people place flowers in their homes adds color and a soothing vibrancy to the house.

According to Bareja, B. (2015), flower in common usage is outside botany. The term refers to which certain plants produce which is also called as blossom meaning colorful, clearly visible, and easily becomes an eye-catcher. Flowers are commonly used as focal parts of wreaths and plant decors where in the common denominator is primarily the presence of attractive blossoms as perceived primarily through the sense of sight like roses, orchids, anthurium, gerbera and chrysanthemum.

Chrysanthemum or also known as mums is one of the most popular flowers in the world. This is because of its tantalizing colors and shapes that it’s difficult to ignore them in stores. This can be found mostly in Asia and Northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China. In some countries like Italy, France, Spain and Philipines, it symbolizes death and are used only for funerals or on graves, while other types

carry no such symbolism; similarly, in China, Japan and Korea, white chrysanthemums are symbolic of adversity, lamentation and/or grief. This is the reason why chrysanthemums are saleable to these countries and not just serve as for decoration.

However, a flower which is separated from its roots doesn’t last long as they typically wilt after a few days especially if they will use it as the flower in the bouquet, decoration and in funeral or grave. Well, flower preservation is as early as the history of men. One old method in preserving flowers is pressing; a very easy way where in the flower is put on any writing material then press down by a heavy object, the negative side is the relief is lost and the flowers are flat. This kind of preservation is not viable if you want your flowers to have a longer life. Another commonly used procedure for preservation is the sugar, vinegar, and water solution. Nutrients required by the flower are provided by the sugar, while the vinegar serves as an antibacterial keeping the sweetened water away from contamination. There are also commercially made flower food which is also an effective way in lengthen a life span of a fresh cut flowers. Methods such as adding an aspirin or bleach are also believed to help keep flowers fresh longer.

The researchers will find another way on how to lengthen the life span of a certain flower. The researchers will use the Chrysanthemum flower for it is said that this it last longer than any other flower when cut. Although equally effective and easy to make the said methods, this study can benefit others and will contribute to the pool of knowledge.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

People nowadays are fascinated about flowers because it of its captivating beauty due to its color, shape and sometimes its odor. This allow many to carry their messages perfectly like a ‘get- well soon’ for a family or sick friends, congratulation messages to a newly promoted friend, sympathy to a grieving group, and to show our felling to another person. Every occasion is celebrated with flowers. Because of this, flower preservation is very important where it helps the flower to last longer.

The researchers find this study significant and at the same time useful. First of all it will benefit people whom sell flowers for a living. It will give them knowledge especially on how to preserve and maintain the freshness of the flowers they sell and to prevent it from being easily withered. Second, it will also benefit people that like flowers in way they can lengthen the lifespan of a certain flower and don’t waste money in buying another if it gets wilted quickly. Lastly it will help future researchers as this study will serve as there reference to achieve what they want.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The researchers find their study fascinating at the same time practical. This study explores the feasibility of an alternative flower preservative to find the best among the rest preservative. The gathering of the samples will be gathered

at San Jose, Nueva Ecija from March 2017 while the conduction of the study will be also held in San Jose, Nueva Ecija.
