Lesson 1: Science Lesson

Activities/Assessment

  1. Choose a topic in a science lesson and make 6 objectives aligned in three domains of learning (cognitive, affective and psychomotor-2 objectives each domain).

Topic: Eclipses

Cognitive

 Define and describe eclipse and its two kinds (Solar and Lunar).  Explain how solar and lunar eclipse occurs.

Affective

 Draw a portrait to illustrate the position of Sun, Moon, and Earth during Solar and Lunar eclipse.  Practice safety measures to avoid damage to the eyes while observing a solar eclipse.

Psychomotor

 Promote the safety measures during a solar eclipse.  Evaluate the importance of safety precautions for viewing solar eclipse to avoid harmful effects.

  1. Which of the objectives from the domains of learning have you achieved better than the other? Discuss why.

The domain of learning that I have achieved better than the other is the cognitive learning. The cognitive domain is one of the three domains of measuring learning. It focuses on acquisition, retention and usage of knowledge, whereas the affective domain covers emotions and values, and the psychomotor domain includes physical movement and coordination. I achieved most because it is the easiest way to create a list of objectives on planning our lesson plans. But in terms of what I learned, the cognitive domain is the learning objectives that I truly understand. In this domain, it involves the development of our mental skill and the acquisition of Knowledge. Furthermore on creating a cognitive objective it must not include the phrases „to know‟ or „to understand‟ but instead active verbs such as „define‟, „describe‟, „tabulate‟ and etc. On the other hand the affective and psychomotor also has a list of different action verb. I also learned that the cognitive domain, within this domain the students process new information, store knowledge, and retrieve it to apply to new circumstances.

Teacher

Stand up class and let us pray

Good Morning Class

Take your seat please.

Let‟s recall what we had yesterday What is our topic yesterday?

Very Good!

What do you call when the lighted side gets smaller during the change of full moon to the new moon?

Pupils

Amen……

Good Morning Ma‟am Gomey Good Morning classmates Good Morning!

Thank You! (Pupils be seated)

It is all about the motion of the moon

It is called the waning phase

(Teacher will show the model for Eclipses)

Listen Carefully our Lesson Is all about Eclipses

There are many bodies in space. The Sun shines on these bodies. A body in space may also block the sunlight and cast a shadow on another body, making it look dark. The darkening of a body in space is called an Eclipse.

What do you call on the darkening of a body in space?

Very Good!

Okay class Did you ask your parents or grandparents if they have seen a bright day suddenly turned into night because the sun became completely dark?

Such a phenomenon called a Solar Eclipse. In a Solar Eclipse, the moon completely blocks the view of the sun.

What eclipse is when the moon blocks the light from the Sun and Forms a Shadow on Earth?

Very Good!

A Solar Eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun causing a shadow of the Moon to fall on certain portions of the Earth.

(Pupils Listen)

It is called Eclipse.

Yes Teacher

It is a Solar Eclipse.

From these locations, it appears as if the sun has gone dark. Since the Moon is very small in front of the Sun, it only blocks a part of it. Hence, a solar eclipse cannot be seen from every part of the Earth, but only from the locations where the shadow of the Moon falls.

Class did you Understand?

Very Good!

The three major parts during a solar eclipse are:  Umbra  Antumbra  Penumbra

What are the three major parts during a solar eclipse?

Okay kids listen carefully.

The Umbra is the portion of the Moon‟s shadow where the moon completely covers the Sun.

These were the total eclipse occurs. where you cannot see the Sun at all.

Antumbra is the area beyond the Umbra. Here the moon is completely in front of the Sun, but doesn‟t cover the entire Sun.

The outline of the Sun can be seen around the shadow of the Moon.

And that is when you see the Annular Solar Eclipse.

Penumbra is the area of the shadow where only a portion of the Moon is in front

Yes, it is.

The Three Major Parts during a solar Eclipse are Umbra, Antumbra and Penumbra.

(Pupils Listen)

Look how the moon is slowly passing from the Penumbra to the Umbra.

This is the Penumbra, the region beyond the Umbra

When the moon travels through the Penumbra, we see a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse, where the moon is faintly visible to us.

When the part of the moon is in the Penumbra and a part on it is in Umbra, We see a Partial lunar eclipse and when the moon travels to the Umbra we see a Total lunar eclipse.

There are times when the moon appears to be Red

Oh, don‟t be scared kids I will tell you how that happens

The rays of the sun are made of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. When the sun rays hits the atmosphere of the Earth most of the colors get scattered away and the color Red remains. Due to which we see a Red or a Blood Moon during a Total Lunar Eclipse.

Our Main Idea about Lunar Eclipse it occurs when Earth blocks the sun‟s light from the moon, so the moon passes through the Earth‟s Shadow.

Trivia Time!

The word „Eclipse‟ in Greek means Downfall.

A Solar Eclipse always takes place about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse!

Amazing isn‟t it.

4. Generalization

Therefore, what is an eclipse?

What are the two types of eclipse?

What happening during solar eclipse?

How about during lunar eclipse?

Very well said!

5. Application

In our next activity, I will group you into two groups.

We are going to use the same groupings we had done on our last activity. I will give each group illustration boards, marker, crayon, ruler, and other drawing materials. What you are going to do is to illustrate what happens during solar and lunar eclipse. Solar group will draw about the Solar Eclipse and the other group is the Lunar Eclipse.

Then the Leader will present their work.

Is that clear?

You have ten minutes to finish the task.

An Eclipse is a shadow casts by the moon or Earth in space.

The two types of eclipse are solar and lunar eclipse.

The moon blocks the light from the sun and forms a shadow on earth.

The earth blocks the light from the sun and forms a shadow on the moon.

Yes, it is.

IV. Evaluation

Get your notebook and answer the following.

A. Define what is being described.

____1. It is a shadow cast by heavenly body in space. ____2. It occurs during a full moon when Earth is between the sun and the moon. ____3. A shadow is formed on it during a solar eclipse. ____4. It blocks the light coming from the sun during a lunar eclipse. ____5. It occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth.

B. For the numbers 6-9, draw the position of the Sun, Moon, and Earth during Solar or Lunar Eclipse.

6 - 7. Solar Eclipse

8 - 9. Lunar Eclipse

C. For number 10. Discuss briefly the safety measure during Solar Eclipse.

Okay class! Are you through?

Let‟s answer this.

(the student getting their notebook)

Yes we are

(pupils answers are:

  1. Eclipse
  2. Lunar eclipse
  3. Earth

Very Good!

Count the number of correct answers.

How many 10, 9,……0?

Very Good.

V. Assignment

For your assignment…

(teacher posts the assignment)

Will you please read?

Draw the model of Solar and Lunar Eclipse and describe the process.

Is that clear?

Very Good

Lets stand up and pray!

Goodbye class!

  1. Moon
  2. Solar Eclipse 6 - 7. (Sun – Moon – Earth) 8 - 9 (Sun – Earth – Moon)
  3. Use an basin with water)

(Pupils raise their hands)

(pupils read)

Yes, It is

Amen….

Good Bye Ma‟am Gomey

Good Bye Classmates

Good Bye!

  1. Which kind of eclipse does the picture show?
  2. True or False: You must be in the moon‟s shadow to see a total solar eclipse.

A. True B. False

  1. What do we call the sun‟s outer atmosphere that you see during a solar eclipse?

A. an umbra B. a corona C. an orbit D. a shadow

  1. Why isn‟t there a lunar eclipse every night?

A. Because lunar eclipse can only happen during a new moon B. Because the moon‟s orbit is tilted, so the sun, moon and earth don‟t line up straight every night. C. Because the moon disappears for a certain amount of time each year. D. Because they only happen when the moon blocks the sun‟s light from reaching the earth.

  1. Which of the following is not true about a total solar eclipse?

A. It can be viewed once a year from every spot on Earth. B. It is dangerous to look at without the proper device. C. When it happens, the moon blocks all of the sun except the corona. D. You must be within moon‟s umbra to see it.
