INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1:

In a bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Slowly add water until a smooth dough forms. Add a few drops of food coloring and knead into dough. STEP 2: Roll the dough into a rectangle. This will be the cytoplasm of the cell. STEP 3: Around the edges push the cotton swabs into the dough to represent the cell wall. STEP 4: Just inside the cotton swabs, create a circle of yarn to represent the cell membrane. STEP 5: Cut a circle out of the tissue paper to represent the nucleus and add to the cell. STEP 6: Place the styrofoam ball or nucleolus in the middle of the tissue paper.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS

Plant and animal cells are both eukaryotic cells, meaning that they both have a clearly defined nucleus. Eukaryotic cells also contain organelles. Organelles that can be found in both plant and animal cells include:

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS

PLANT CELLS

Plant cells contain organelles called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are responsible for converting energy from the sun into food in a process called photosynthesis. A plant cell can have one or hundreds of chloroplast cells. Chloroplasts move around inside the plant's cell to get the most sun exposure. These organelles are special because they contain their own DNA and ribosomes. These organelles are what give plants their green color. Vacuoles play a vital role in plants. They store water and nutrients and can fill up to 90% of the space within a plant cell. They also control the size and stiffness of a cell. If you have ever seen a droopy plant it is most likely due to the fact that the vacuoles have shrunk because of a lack of water. Another difference between plant and animal cells is that plant cells have cell walls. Cell walls give the plant cells their boxy shape and provide support for tall upright structures like stalks and tree trunks. ANIMAL CELLS Animal cells do not have a cell wall and tend to be round in shape. Animal cells do have vacuoles, but they are usually small. Animal cells also have an additional organelle called lysosomes.
