Title of Experiment: Standard Test Methods for Time of Setting of Hydraulic Cement by Vicat Needle
Introduction:
Our group gathered in the Civil Testing Laboratory, for testing the consistency, initial and final setting time
of Portland cement. The standard for cement we which we used in our experiment it was (ASTM C191).
Our Aim was to know the consistency of standard cement paste and to calculate the initial and final setting
time cement paste. As the amount of water used in, hydrating cement affects the setting time. We needed a
specific amount of water for standard paste that we could use for testing.
Initial setting time is when we mix dry cement with water and noticeable stiffening starts.
Final setting time is when the mixture starts to hardening and gaining strength.
At last it is important to know the setting times, initial setting time is to estimate for transportation, placing
and shaping the cement.
Materials and Equipment:
Vicat Apparatus
Cement Mixer
Mixing Bowl
Digital Weighing Balance
Thermometer
Measuring Cylinder
Water
Cement
Procedure:
1. We use a plunger with 10mm diameter. Initial setting needle with 1mm in diameter. Final setting
needle with 5mm in diameter.

  1. We use a plunger with 10mm diameter. Initial setting needle with 1mm in diameter. Final setting needle with 5mm in diameter.

  1. We took 500g of cement by using the digital weighing balance, we subtracted the bowl weight from the total weight.
  2. We took 158g of water and the water temperature was 18 degree Celsius.
  3. Then we mixed the cement and water in mixing bowl.
  4. Then we put the mix cement in mould of Vicat apparatus and we placed the mould in its place in the Vicat apparatus and we use the 10mm diameter plunger, we lower it till it touches the edge of mould and then brought the plunger in the center of paste and then we leave it falling freely.
  5. We took the depth from the Vicat ruler, if the depth is between 5- 7 mm then we got the standard paste with normal consistency.
  6. We use the 1 mm diameter needle, and penetrate the sample with this needle by leaving it to free fall, and then we read the Vicat ruler scale until the depth of penetration is 5 mm.
  7. We replace the needle with Final setting needle and penetrate the sample by it every 15 minutes till start of hardening. Results and Discussion : Initial Setting Time = 72 minutes Final Setting Time = 2 hour 32 minutes Mixing Time = 240 seconds We have to do our test on cement of standard consistency, to measure the setting times of cement. Consistency of cement can be obtained by the water/cement ratio in between 26%-33% Amount of Cement = 500g, Amount of Water = 158g, Depth of Penetration = 5mm, Water Temperature = 18 Degree Celsius Reference :
