ribsome: 70S ribosomes smaller than ribosomes on endoplasmic reticulum and within the cytosol , same size as those in prokaryotes. It composed of rRNA and proteins. It performs translation which is the assembly of amino acids to form proteins. matrix: protein-rich region. It contains DNA loop, ribosomes and many enzyme molecules. It is the site of the link reaction, Krebs cycle and production of urea. Has appropriate enzymes and a suitable pH for the Krebs cycle. crista: Highly folded so as to increase surface area: volume ratio aerobic respiration outer mitochondrial membrane: Made up of phospholipid bilayer and proteins. Pumps protons into intermembrane space; Contains transport proteins for shuttling pyruvate into mitochondrion. Makes ATP as well. inner mitochondrial membrane: It is folded into cristae to give a large surface area. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with protein complexes of electron transport chain and ATP synthetase for oxidative phosphorylation. Pumps protons into intermembrane space and makes ATP. intermembrane space: lower pH than cytosol and matrix. It is the site of high concentration of protons. Small space to quickly accumulate protons. FIGURE 1 : SHOWING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROGRAPH OF A MITOCHONDRIA
