FromaFreudianperspective,Elsa’semotionalandmagicalrepression
isaclearexampleofneurosis.Freudbelievedthatunresolvedunconscious
conflictcanleadtoanxietyandneuroticbehavior(Freud,1961).Elsa
suppressesherfeelingstomaintaincontrol,butthisonlyintensifiesher
internaldistress,untilitfinallyexplodesduringhercoronation.Hericy
outburstisn’tjustmagic,it’sareleaseofallthefearandpressureshe’s
bottledupforyears.Shealsoshowsdefensemechanismslikeisolationand
denial,distancingherselfphysicallyandemotionallyasawaytoavoidthe
painofconfrontingherinnerconflict.

Elsa’semotionalgrowthisalsoastrongexampleofemotional intelligence.Atfirst,shelackstheabilitytorecognizeormanageher emotions.Butbytheendofthefilm,andespeciallyinFrozenII,shebecomes moreself-aware,betteratregulatingherfeelings,andmoreattunedtothe needsofothers(Salovey&Mayer,1990).Herstoryremindsusthat emotionalhealingtakestimeandthatit’sokaytobeafraidofwhoweare whilestillworkingtowardself-acceptance. Overall,Elsaisabeautifullycomplexcharacterwhoseinnerstruggles resonatewithsomanypeople.Herstoryismorethanafairytale,it’sa deeplypsychologicalnarrativeaboutfear,anxiety,self-acceptance,and emotionalgrowth.Herjourneyisareminderthatembracingouremotions, ratherthanfearingorhidingthemiskeytobecomingourtruestselves.
