Forthisweek’sdiscussion,Igottheinspirationfrommydaughtersand IchoseElsafromDisney’sFrozen(2013).ElsaistheSnowQueenof Arendelle,bornwiththemagicalabilitytocreateiceandsnow.From childhood,she’staughttohideherpowersafteraccidentallyinjuringher sisterAnna.Shegrowsupisolated,anxious,andafraidofherself,believing thatifsheeverlosescontrolofheremotions,she’llhurtthepeopleshe loves.Herjourneythroughoutthefilmisanemotionallypowerfulexampleof repression,self-discovery,andlearningtoembraceone’strueidentity. FromaFreudianperspective,Elsa’semotionalandmagicalrepression isaclearexampleofneurosis.Freudbelievedthatunresolvedunconscious conflictcanleadtoanxietyandneuroticbehavior(Freud,1961).Elsa suppressesherfeelingstomaintaincontrol,butthisonlyintensifiesher internaldistress,untilitfinallyexplodesduringhercoronation.Hericy outburstisn’tjustmagic,it’sareleaseofallthefearandpressureshe’s bottledupforyears.Shealsoshowsdefensemechanismslikeisolationand denial,distancingherselfphysicallyandemotionallyasawaytoavoidthe painofconfrontingherinnerconflict. “bad”butmisunderstood,andherrefusaltoacceptthemmirrorshowmany ofustrytosuppresspartsofwhoweare.WhenElsasings“LetItGo”,it’snot justamusicalmoment,it’sherbreakthrough.Shestopshidingandstarts embracingherwholeself,movingtowardindividuation,whichJungdescribed astheintegrationoftheconsciousandunconsciousmind(Jung,1964). Elsa’semotionalgrowthisalsoastrongexampleofemotional intelligence.Atfirst,shelackstheabilitytorecognizeormanageher emotions.Butbytheendofthefilm,andespeciallyinFrozenII,shebecomes moreself-aware,betteratregulatingherfeelings,andmoreattunedtothe needsofothers(Salovey&Mayer,1990).Herstoryremindsusthat emotionalhealingtakestimeandthatit’sokaytobeafraidofwhoweare whilestillworkingtowardself-acceptance. Overall,Elsaisabeautifullycomplexcharacterwhoseinnerstruggles resonatewithsomanypeople.Herstoryismorethanafairytale,it’sa deeplypsychologicalnarrativeaboutfear,anxiety,self-acceptance,and emotionalgrowth.Herjourneyisareminderthatembracingouremotions, ratherthanfearingorhidingthemiskeytobecomingourtruestselves.
