NURS 6003: Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing

Introduction

Choosing the right specialty that aligns with one’s professional developmental goals is a

significant step of concluding the academic and professional success plan. This was why this

writer pondered various options for his nursing specialty, including a close look at his selected

specialty, Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) and the second

preferred specialty, Nursing Informatics. A development of justifications for selecting AGACNP

specialty was also presented in this plan. Lastly, related professional organizations to the chosen

specialty were examined well and becoming a member of these associations were explored.

The results of these efforts are below.

I. Comparison of Nursing Specialties

On this part of the paper, the comparison on both specialties were explored through five

differentiator categories, namely, description, target population, scope of practice, focus of

graduation education, and role being prepared for.

By practice description, the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGAC

NP) is an advanced practice specialty for registered nurses that focuses care to adults and older

adults with acute, critical, and complex chronic physical and mental illnesses across the entire

adult age spectrum. Meanwhile, Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing

science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and

On the other hand, NI specialty functions depend on the critical thinking model, Nursing

Process which comprises of Assessment, Diagnosis, Problems, and Issues Identification,

Outcome Identification, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation (ANA, 2015). These

functions include (ANA, 2015):

▪ Collects comprehensive data, information, and emerging evidence pertinent to the situation,

▪ Analyzes assessment data to identify diagnoses, problems, issues, and opportunities for

improvement,

▪ Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the healthcare consumer or to the

situation,

▪ Develops a plan that prescribes strategies, alternatives, and recommendations to attain

expected outcomes,

▪ Implements the individualized plan, and employs informatics solutions and strategies for

education and teaching to promote health and a safe environment,

▪ Evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.

By graduation focus of education, AGAC NP as a general nurse practitioner specialty is

driven on advanced clinical training beyond nursing curriculum. The specific program provides

nurses with additional clinical competencies they can utilize to practice in an advanced care level

(Brooks, 2021). Meanwhile, NI as a Masteral of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is a higher

education which trains nurses to be leaders in technology, operations, and process improvement

(Brooks, 2021). The curriculum encompasses courses like clinical quality, data-driven decisions,

leadership, and system implementation (Brooks, 2021).

By the role being prepared for, aspiring AG ACNPs are being prepared to provide

services ranging from disease prevention to critical care to stabilize the patient’s condition,

prevent complications, restore maximum health and/or provide palliative care in this

postgraduate study (AACN, 2016). Alternately, NI program equips registered nurses to be

Informatics Nurse Specialists (INS) who are responsible for implementing or coordinating

projects involving multiple professions and specialties, and employ their unique informatics

knowledge, experience, and skills to support and enable other registered nurses to best use data,

information, knowledge, and technology in their practice domain (ANA, 2015).

II. Justification of Nursing Specialty

The reasons why this writer have chosen the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program as his specialty are because of three things: (1) This Masteral of Science in Nursing curriculum aligns to his main professional developmental goal in pursuing advanced practice education; (2) This coursework has a wide range of potentials for growth in professional values, and lots of opportunities for learnings; and (3) Social and economic conditions improvement. The professional developmental goal that this writer perseveres for is to level up in the nursing practice of acute care especially in kidney health. It is his passion for work and the main driving force for his profession as mentioned in the discussion related to examining specialties. He feels great fulfilment whenever positive outcomes result from acute care nursing and medical interventions. There was an unexplainable sense of achievement felt every time disease progression was prevented and managed, and patients received beneficial impacts. Adult-Gerontology Acute Care advanced practice nursing is a complex field, that positively means learning and improvement chances for professional development. In a dynamic professional sense, this area of practice can open up opportunities such as: (1) Generation of new set of skills – expanding the functions that you usually do; (2) Development of workplace/relational skills – since this field always require one to work in a team, workplace or human soft skills are the tools and practices that help people

steps to become a member of the association are as follows: (1) Identify one’s membership type (Licensed NP, Student NP, Licensed NP student, Newly Graduated NP, Retired Np, and Associate or non-NP); (2) Fill out application form online and/or submit necessary documents, and; (3) Pay the registration fee. As a student NP, it is nice to know that AANP offers a lot of benefits for students. These include their "Stay-up-to-date" membership privileges (Free Online Subscriptions to Two NP Journals, members-exclusive discounts on Clinical reference tools, government affairs update newsletter subscriptions, and etc.), professional network within the AANP community, Championing the NP role opportunities, and professional development investment where AANP gives off free or discounted Continuing Education (CE) activities, grants and scholarship, ads for job vacancies, and discounts on certification. Additionally, the membership fee for students is way cheaper than other categories. ANNA is an organization “committed to advancing the nephrology nursing specialty and nurturing every ANNA member through providing the highest quality educational products, programs, and services (ANNA, n.d.). To become a member, one must be a Registered Nurse (RN), open an account on their website, and pay the fee. Discounts apply if the RN wants a longer type of membership. Furthermore, to be a Certified Nephrology Nurse Practitioner (CNN-NP), a licensed NP should comply with the requirements given by the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC). It has three steps: (1) Eligibility checks which includes licensure verification, hours of experience in nephrology field, master’s degree education validation, and nephrology-related continuing education approved by specific professional nurses’ organizations; (2) Submit forms and pay exam fees, and; (3) Practice, prepare, and take the exam (NNCC, n.d.). After passing the exam, one will be given a certificate and be recognized on partnered associations of the NNCC.

Conclusion

The development of an Academic and Professional Network helped build and contributed ideas, aspirations, insights, and pathways to success. The formulation of Strategies to promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics aided and enlightened the road to be an effective scholarly practitioner. Research Analysis gave a consolidation of academic skills significant in the practice of a Nurse Practitioner. And now, finalizing this Plan ensures that the students examined the Nursing Specialties of their preference and the Professional Associations affiliated that can enhance career advancements. This course, Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing , is a great program that help this writer and student to embrace the core values of Walden University and to prepare for future endeavors of academic and professional success in whichever field he may go.
