American Nurses Association (ANA) - The organization that represents all nurses in the US, however not all nurses are officially part. Viewed by nurses as the voice of the nurses. Some state chapters form unions. Publishes the major nursing publication: American Nurse Today. Affiliated with the American Nurses Foundation, The American Academy of Nursing and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) - Established by the ANA in 1973 to develop and implement a program that would provide tangible recognition of professional achievement. In charge of accrediting nursing education institutions, certifying nursing programs, provide pathway to excellence programs for organizations that are committed to providing nurses with a positive nursing practice environment. Other programs associated with this organization are Magnet Recognition Programs and the Nursing Knowledge Center. The National League of Nursing (NLN) - Focuses on excellence in nursing education and composed of nursing schools and nursing educators. Originally founded in 1893 as the American Society of Superintendants in Training Schools. Holds a number of educational meetings annually and provides continuing education and certification for nursing educators. Four goals are to be the national leader in nursing education, build a diverse, sustainable, member-led organization, be the champion and voice of nurse educators and promote evidence based nursing education and the scholarship of teaching. American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) - National organization for educational programs at Bachelor's level and higher. Particularly concerned with the development of standards and resources and promotes innovation, research and practice to advance nursing education. Involved in creating and promoting new roles in nursing, as well as other nursing education programs. Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) - A not for profit international organization based in the US. A nursing honor society created in 1922 by a small group of nursing students at what is now the Indiana University School of Nursing. National Student Nursing Association (NSNA) - Made up of nursing students nationally, major publication is Imprint. Serves as a way to get involved and to begin developing professional skills.
