Complete the following problems: Q1: Strength of C-H bonds and Stability of Alkyl radicals a) Rank stability of the three radicals below: A B C b) Rank the strength of the three C-H bonds in the compound below:

Q 2 : BDE and D H

a) Use the table of bond dissociation energies to calculate the DH of the two reactions below: H H H A B C

  • Br 2 Br
  • HBr
  • Cl 2 Cl
  • HCl

c) Chlorination of alkanes can yield a variety of products. For the chlorination of 3-

methylpentane, determine the number of possible monochlorinated and

dichlorinated products (considering constitutional isomers). Draw the structures of

each product.

d) Radical chlorination of 1,3,5-trimethylcyclohexane (structure shown below) results

in the formation of multiple monohalogenated products. Identify the possible

products, and estimate the relative percentages of each based on C-H reactivity for

chlorination (Tertiary: Secondary: Primary = 5: 4: 1).
