APN Development Plan Stephani S. Harp, RN, BSN NR500NP Dr. Krawczyk March 8th,^2022
APN Development Plan Overall, nurse practitioners have various scopes of practice often depending on the state of residency or where the nurse practitioner has determined to practice. Typically, nurse practitioners can diagnose patients using a variety of necessary approaches and then subsequently treat the patient. Whether the state has full, limited, or restricted authority determines if the nurse practitioner can practice without a supervising physician (Muench et al., 2020). Nurse practitioner competencies have a great relation to program aimed content. The competencies are a suggestion for nurse practitioner programs teachings (The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2017). We will discuss these competencies later on, concerning my strengths and weaknesses. Being a nurse practitioner will take leadership skills such as determination, resilience, and knowing the best practice. In this paper, we will discuss the nurse practitioners’ scope of practice in relation to practicing state, core competencies, and leadership skills required for the role. Advanced Practice Nurse Scope of Practice The intended state for practice is currently Colorado. The educational requirements for a nurse practitioner in Colorado include completing a baccalaureate in nursing, then acquiring a post-graduate degree from an accredited institution in the students' chosen specific specialty (i.e., family, pediatrics, gerontology), then complete and pass a certification exam associated with the chosen specialty (NursingLicensure.org, 2021). The persons hoping for this licensure can either complete the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)’s exam or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)’s exam. It is required to complete one of these exams with a successful passing score before beginning work as a nurse practitioner (Bucceri Androus, 2021). Regulatory requirements include having liability insurance. They also include
or other nurses. It is very humbling; however, I recognize some practitioners have been performing procedures much longer than I have. Asking for help or suggestions on treatments can ensure I am utilizing the best possible sources for client outcomes. As stated above, I mentioned there are not a lot of learning opportunities unless you know where to look for aesthetics. This prompts me to read new scholarly articles, examine evidence-based practice, and shadow when possible. I always want to learn whenever possible because the aesthetic world is constantly coming out with new treatments, anti-aging regimens, and procedures. To be successful in this competitive world, it takes knowing what is new, learning it, and mastering it to satisfy clients' desires. Due to this, it forces me to utilize evidence-based practice when treating my clients. As stated previously, I believe there are core competencies I excel in, while others I could be more competent in. To focus on two of these, I often struggle with participating in activities/organizations that involve advanced practice nursing and communicating knowledge of practice effectively via the written and oral word (Thomas et al., 2017). I find it challenging participating in organizations that involve advanced practice nursing in aesthetics because it is typically a for-profit practice and that makes it very competitive, resulting in a small number of groups willing to share their knowledge. In the future, I would like to start an organization for advanced practice nurses in aesthetics. This would be very beneficial to providers as well as initiate the best client outcomes. Another competency I often struggle with is communicating knowledge of practice verbally and orally. Due to my struggles with dyslexia, I often struggle with professional writing. It has always been very hard for me to essentially get my thoughts across to someone else in words and can even affect my speech at times. I often need to have someone cross-check my written word to ensure legibility. As something may make sense to me,
it may not to someone without the condition. Having several peers review my work may be required when cross-checking my work for advanced practice nursing to ensure my ideas are correctly recognized. Although these competencies are difficult for me, I believe I can overcome them through the scholarly practices I mentioned and be successful. To be successful, it would also be beneficial to take part in scholarly activities to help to achieve nurse practitioner competencies. I would first like to develop my clinical knowledge by taking my CANS (Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist) certification (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2022). While this is not required to inject or perform treatments, such as laser hair removal, it would greatly help me to learn new material and assess my knowledge with the exam. This will also prompt my clients to be more trusting of my current knowledge when I hold this certification. This certification includes laser and light therapies, clinical skincare, and cosmetic injectables (Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board, 2021). I would also like to take any shadowing opportunities offered to me by another nurse, nurse practitioner, physician's associate, or physician to further my skills in any way possible. These further steps of obtaining CANS certification and shadowing can greatly help me to learn and develop my current skills as well as new skills. Leadership Skills When assuming the role of the advanced practice nurse, more specifically a family nurse practitioner, the curriculum states several leadership skills which are required for a nurse practitioner in complex systems. Some of these leadership skills include utilizing advanced and complex leadership to guide and initiate change, supplying leadership to foster cooperation with multiple stakeholders, and promoting cost-effective and quality health care, as well as improved access to health care (Thomas et al., 2017). Utilizing advanced and complex leadership to guide
practitioner practice. All these skills are essential for effective leadership in complex systems for the nurse practitioner. As a student there are strategies, I can utilize to improve my leadership skills. Strategies that can be used to help develop nurse practitioner leadership skills can include further familiarizing myself with statistics and use of excel documents and role-modeling leadership behavior. Familiarizing myself with statistics and the use of excel can be very important to create documents to present to stakeholders. These documents can include competitors’ performance, departments' performance, clinical practice guidelines, and evidence (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). If I can create documents to provide supplementary proof of changes needed to the chief officers of the organizations, the numbers can back up any suggestions. I will be able to be an effective leader if I can promote change for the better in this way. Role- modeling leadership behavior is highly important to ancillary staff in that you must be the change you wish to see. If the staff has a leader who is competent, empathetic, and enforces change for benefit, staff will often acclimate and mimic the leader’s behavior. These are both important strategies to develop leadership skills to become an effective and respected leader. Conclusion In conclusion, this paper discussed the advanced practice nurses’ scope of practice in Colorado, core competencies for the advanced practice nursing student that they are confident in and ones that need improvement, as well as leadership skills and strategies to improve them. Colorado is a full practice state for nurse practitioners, with some requirements before full practice is initiated. Through self-reflection, the student can understand and create a plan for becoming the foremost leader possible.
