What is the role of the pharmacist in the treatment chain? -
- Manage and prepare the supply of medicines
- Giving medications out to patients
- Checking prescriptions
- The three Rs - right drug, right patients, right dosage
- Ensure patient safety - Check each patients' medication record every time he or she gets a new or
refill prescription filled. This is the best way for a pharmacist to prevent potentially dangerous
interactions between drugs.
- Counselling patients including training patients how and when to take doses, following up with
patients to see if medications are working and listening to all of a patient's concerns.
What challenges do you think a modern pharmacist faces? -
- Keeping up knowledge with drug interactions
- Not having the medication the patient needs/shortage - leads to angry customer
- Patients refusing to take medication due to certain reasons e.g religion - this can be hard to handle
- Have to maintain good communication at all times - miscommunication can lead to consequences
Why do you want to be a pharmacist? -

community or own your own pharmacy
- A pharmacist is responsible for so much more than just filling prescriptions.
- They must ensure the accuracy of various drugs, ensuring there are no allergic reactions.

    • I would ask politely if the customer wanted to speak in private
  • I would ask them if they wanted to tell me what they are worried about or if they would prefer to speak to a colleague, options are important so they don't feel so confined - this would make the customer start to feel more reassured.
  • I would make sure I speak in a soft polite manner and go through the medication with them, any side effects and why they are taking it and how long for.
  • If they are still worried about the medication they are being prescribed i would call the doctor/GP and explain the situation to them and perhaps a change in medication to the customer feels more at ease. What would you do if you spotted an obvious mistake on a GPs prescription? -
    • Contact the GP asap and politely tell them that there is a mistake
  • Tell the patient that the medication that has been prescribed is wrong but not to worry as we will sort it out
  • Prescribe the right medication how would you feel if you missed it? -
    • I would be upset as i have put a patient in danger

  • If they were also unfamiliar with the medication, I would tell the customer I needed to research it and plan a follow-up with them by getting their contact information. How do you make sure customers understand how to use the medication you prescribe? -
    • I would write out the dosage clearly so they can reference it later.
  • I would also explain when to take their medication and suggest cues they can use to remember.
  • I would explain the side effects and the results they can expect from following my instructions.
  • Finally, I would ask them to repeat the dosage and when they need to take their medication back to me.
