Introduction to Physical Quantities and Measurement, Study notes of Physics

An introduction to physical quantities and measurement, fundamental concepts in physics. It defines science and explains the importance of accurate measurements in experiments. The document distinguishes between physical and non-physical quantities, detailing how physical quantities are measurable and essential for expressing the laws of physics, while non-physical quantities are qualitative and related to human perception. It also includes a quick quiz to reinforce understanding of dimensions in physical quantities. Useful for high school students. (438 characters)

CHAPTER – 1
PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND MEASUREMENT
Q – 1 : What is science ? Why physical quantities and their measurements important for
scientists ?
Science :
“ The field of observation and experimentation to understand the world around us is known
as science “ .
The Physical World :
We are living in a physical world where we observe many natural phenomena and objects
around us , such as the Sun , stars , moon , oceans , plants , winds , rains , etc. People have
always been curious to know the reality of such happenings . This has led certain people to
investigate the facts and laws working in this world . Everything in our lives is closely linked
to science and the discoveries made by scientists .
Importance of Measurements :
In order to obtain reliable results from experiments , the primary thing is to make accurate
measurements . Physical quantities and their measurements have always been the matter
of interest for scientists . They have been investigating to improve the methods and
instruments for accurate measurements of physical quantities .
Q - 2: What are physical and non-physical quantities, and how are they different in terms of
measurement and application?
Physical and Non-Physical Quantities:
We describe various natural phenomena, events, and human behavior using some of their
features and terms such as love, affection, fear, wisdom, beauty, length, volume, density,
time, temperature, etc.
Physical Quantities:
"Physical quantities are measurable properties of material objects that can be expressed in
terms of a number and a unit".

PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND MEASUREMENT

Q – 1 : What is science? Why physical quantities and their measurements important for scientists? Science : “ The field of observation and experimentation to understand the world around us is known as science “. The Physical World : We are living in a physical world where we observe many natural phenomena and objects around us , such as the Sun , stars , moon , oceans , plants , winds , rains , etc. People have always been curious to know the reality of such happenings. This has led certain people to investigate the facts and laws working in this world. Everything in our lives is closely linked to science and the discoveries made by scientists. Importance of Measurements : In order to obtain reliable results from experiments , the primary thing is to make accurate measurements. Physical quantities and their measurements have always been the matter of interest for scientists. They have been investigating to improve the methods and instruments for accurate measurements of physical quantities. Q - 2: What are physical and non-physical quantities, and how are they different in terms of measurement and application? Physical and Non-Physical Quantities: We describe various natural phenomena, events, and human behavior using some of their features and terms such as love, affection, fear, wisdom, beauty, length, volume, density, time, temperature, etc. Physical Quantities: "Physical quantities are measurable properties of material objects that can be expressed in terms of a number and a unit". Explanation:

Some of these can be measured directly and indirectly using tools and instruments such as:

  • The length of an object using a ruler
  • The time duration of an event using a clock
  • The temperature (the degree of hotness) of somebody using a thermometer They are called physical quantities. The foundation of physics rests upon physical quantities through which the laws and principles of physics are expressed. Non-Physical Quantities: "Non-physical quantities that cannot be measured or expressed in terms of numbers and units". Explanation: Other quantities such as love, affection, fear, wisdom, beauty, cannot be measured using tools and instruments. They often pertain to the perception or interpretation of the observer. How are Non-Physical Quantities Measured? They can be described qualitatively or compared using some pre-determined criteria, indices, or through survey techniques. Non-physical quantities mostly help to understand and to analyze human behavior, emotions, and social interactions. Quick Quiz: Is a non-physical quantity has dimensions? Answer: No, non-physical quantity has no dimensions.
