Play-by-Play Sports Coverage: Calling Football and Baseball Plays, Lecture notes of Journalism

The requirements for creating play-by-play sports coverage for both football and baseball. Key elements include time and score updates, down and distance, player identification, and observing fielders' positions and reactions. Steve's examples cover football with details on time and score, down and distance, formation identification, and player recognition. Baseball coverage focuses on player id, lack of action, and interpreting fielders' positions and reactions.

Play-by-plsy sports coverage
For the play-by-play project we have to do:
3 best play-by-play calls... can be anywhere from 15-30 seconds long
also have to do 2 minutes of sustained p-b-p
***Steve said that if one of your best p-b-p calls is in your 2 minute clip, then you don't have to
have that separate 15-30sec clip***
DON'T USE "ZERO" --- NOT SPORTS JARGON.... SAY "NOTHING" INSTEAD
Two main examples he went over in class
Football
Time and score --- must have... after every score, give the update too
Down and distance
if you have the time, say the formation (ex. McGloin in the gun, 2 far, 2 near,
etc.) --- if you are confused with this, I can explain it a little better in person lol
Identify the player who made the play... depending on speed of play/amount of
players in area, you can identify the player when the play is over (ex. if two PSU
receivers and 3 defenders are in the same area going for the ball like in a Hail
Mary)
Baseball
Player I.D. is easier because of speed of game
Lack of action in baseball
Fill in the blanks along the way
See how the fielders are playing the batter (outfielders
shallow/deep, shifted right/left... infielders playing in, playing
for the double play, protecting the line, etc.
Easy to tell how the ball was hit by looking at the outfielders reaction
starts running back towards wall = over his head
starts running towards the gap = ball hit to the gap
starts running towards infield = ball hit shallow
ETC
