The Difficulties as a Behavior Analyst School of Social and Behavioral Science, Capella University PSYC4002: ABA Ethics & Supervision The Difficulties as a Behavior Analyst The Difficulties as a Behavior Analyst The Nirvana is the Behavior Analyst that I interviewed who explained that because of society and the general working environment, making the proper ethical decision can be difficult. Nirvana’s career has involved many situations where society’s dilemma’s and environmental circumstances such as the George Floyd dilemma, school setting furnishing, resources available to her and the client, being a leader, teacher, and student, using professional discretion, having an open mind to differences, and having self-confidence. By sending a questionnaire, as interview questions I could get some pretty explicit experiences that had ethical factors included in them, my analysis has been put together using the interview questions, as well as reading scholarly articles written by Wilkenfeld and McCarthy (2020) who brings up factors of ethical concerns that ABA specialist experience with autism spectrum, BACB (2019) to discuss the application of ethical codes, Dalphonse (2021) to define what was considered operational aggressive behavior, Shutte (2018) cross-cultural ethical concerns in Health-care practices, Sellers, Alai-Rosales, and MacDonald (2016) touch on the high ethical expectation that consist in the practice of Applied Behavior Analyst, and then there is Turner, Fischer, and Luiselli (2016) who discuss topics of the relationships between a behavior analyst and competency-based, ethical, and social valid approaches of supervision and Accessible ABA. In order to gather this information I interviewed a BACB Supervisor, searched Capella University’s Library Summons search engine for articles and The Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analyst
that supported the BACB’s and my analysis to prove validity. In my research I used two different methods (interview/questionnaire, as well as case studies of researches that have been established within the past five years. Ethical Difficulties Difficulties It is possible that everyone in America has heard about the story Of George Floyd, this was a huge cultural dilemma that every news casting station displayed on TV and radio stations that hosted people who openly spoke of their disdain and anger towards Caucasian Government Official, including the police department. When making a professional treatment decision, the spoken of BACB Supervisor had to make a decision that took in consideration of what was going on in society. She was advised to include the non-emergency police line into the behavior plan as a contingency plan to decrease aggressive behavior. Although this action could be considered as a “Normative Response” (Shutte, 2018) to such behavior the Behavior Analyst had to take in the Cost-benefits into consideration: the limitations that the client had were because of the vulnerabilities of his mental illness, not because of criminal behaviorism and during the time this was happening with all the promoted an ideology that had been broadcasted in the media, it is possible that since the client was a mixed African American, the polices presence would have caused overwhelming stimuli that influenced target behaviors of aggression at the sight of the police (Turner, 2016 p.293). My analysis is that when a profession is taken in consideration, there are two types of rights and two types of wrongs: sometimes morals and ethics go hand in hand and then in other circumstances they need to be kept separate, it is significant the professional can use their discretion on which which is which. Being able to be mindful of cross- cultural communication within the field is a significant skill to have. Cross-Cultural Communication
functioning, autonomy stimulates a need for psychological growth. My friend who is a BACB Supervisor makes it a point in not intruding on her client’s autonomy, in fact made it possible to encourage autonomy even in moments of keeping the environment safe. It is my analysis that the motivation that a person receives helps the person feel empowered to show a willingness to learn and overcome challenges, when a person feels as though they are being made to do something outside of their will the person becomes more resistant/willful because they feel as though they are powerless and want to display to the perp who is intruding that they can do whatever they want by defying them. Recommendatio ns As a BACB Supervisor My friend is wonderful about advising and giving recommendations in a way that doesn’t invalidate the person being advised, in fact I believe that’s why I like her: throughout my interview with her she could give examples and give guidance through her examples. An overview of her recommendations basically said that in order to an effectively Behavior Analyst it requires being mindful of your client and the fact that they are as human as me, therefore “due onto others as you will have done unto you”: by treating the client as you would want to be treated it helps to ease ethical conflicts. Responsible Conduct of Behavior Analyst: 1.04c Sometimes when making a decision that has to do with the client’s best interest the BA has to make a responsible decision by relying on their conscience verses the recommendation of another. In the interview questions she responded, “I could not in good conscience follow through on that advice” speaking on the advice of her supervisor. In my analysis she was speaking on her responsibility to take all factors in consideration including cross-cultural
factors because the kid was biracial and it was during a time that the media was in an uproar about George Floyd and she didn’t believe calling the police to intervene would be in the kids best interest. Professional and Scientific Relationship: 1. When I think of my interview questions and the answers that I got in response From the BACB Supervisor and the relationship with “Professional and Scientific Relationship” I am reminded of Bailey & Burch (2010) pp.275- 284 where it is discussed the significance of such relationship comprising a trainer, coach and mentor. The BACB Supervisor expresses the need to coach both the mother and the client, by modeling compassion to the client and the mother the BA can be an example of prosocial behaviors and social reciprocation. According to the BA showing compassion to the client the BA is mindful of prior trauma, family dynamics, cultural dynamics, medical history, as well as other aspects of significances in order to apply evidence- based treatment effectively. Treatment/Intervention Efficacy: 2. In the interview my friend talked about a 12-year-old biracial boy who was struggling with aggressive behavior so for an intervention she had to think of something that would be more effective for the kid rather than calling the non-emergency police because of cultural conflict. Her recommendation for this was first to ask for advice and then weigh the pros and cons before following through: sometimes you have to due the proper research and apply yourself as a BA verses passing the buck to someone else. Methods for Building Cultural Competency According to Baily & Burch (2010) p.60 to practice as a BACB with full competency you have to do more research than is required of a BA, that is saying that in order to work with effective cultural competency it will take the BA to have both the research education and the
