Quantifiers
What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Ƙ I had a glass of water. I didn’t have a cup of tea.
Ƙ I had a double espresso. I didn’t have a yogurt.
Ƙ I had an egg. I didn’t have an omelette.
Ƙ I had some bread. I didn’t have any juice.
Ƙ I had some butter. I didn’t have any fruit.
Ƙ I had some jam. I didn’t have any honey.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Countable Uncountable
> an egg > some bread
> a glass of water > some butter
> any juice
> any honey
We use some or any to describe an unspecified number or quantity.
We use some in positive sentences, we use any in negative sentences or questions.
Ƙ Let’s buy some apples.
Ƙ No, I haven’t got any apples.
Ƙ Have you got any apples?
The same rule applies for words that contain some or any.
Ƙ There’s something in my shoe.
Ƙ There is somebody in the garden.
Ƙ I haven’t got anything to wear.
Ƙ Is there anybody at home?
Exception: we use some in questions that expect a positive response:
Ƙ Would you like something to drink?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exercise:
What did you have for breakfast this morning? Did you have any cereals? Did you have a
cup of hot chocolate? Write positive and negative sentences. Use countable and
uncountable food. (Choose another meal if you did not have breakfast).
