I. Introduction While participating in a business communication class this semester with two instructors, Nguyen Thi Thuy Ha and Jonathan Durham, I gained valuable experiences and information, such as what role I should play in a team (through the test according to the Belbin model that the instructor has provided, conveys information effectively (instead of just using verbal language, it is also necessary to use non-verbal language to help listeners easily understand). collection, appropriate use of formal and informal forms, etc.) Additionally, I understand that fostering the ability to write engaging letters is fundamental to my future professional career. This reflection is intended to The aim is to analyze my development of business communication skills, focusing on key areas such as presenting and listening. II. Skill Development Analysis
1. Active listening Active listening is of significant importance in the business sector, facilitating effective understanding and positive interaction with colleagues, customers and stakeholders. Initially, before taking the course, I struggled with the concept of active listening, often feeling nervous and uncertain about how to engage in conversations meaningfully. However, right from the first lesson of the course when lecturer Nguyen Thi Thuy Ha lectured on communication models, it gave me a new perspective on what active listening is like. The course also gave me many opportunities to hone my active listening skills through a variety of activities, including class discussions and group work. Participating in these exercises requires attentive listening, prompting me to ask clarifying questions and provide insightful answers. For example, in group discussions, I actively contribute by diligently taking notes, summarizing key points, and offering insightful opinions. Overcoming the initial challenges, I had difficulty shifting my focus from internal thoughts to truly caring for others. To overcome this obstacle, I dedicated myself to practicing mindfulness techniques and solicited feedback from colleagues and instructors. Over time, I have seen dramatic improvements in my ability to actively listen, leading to more collaborative and productive interactions in the professional field. This advancement underscores the transformative impact of deliberate practice and reflection in enhancing critical communication skills.
2. Present confidently Developing confidence when presenting is important for communicating ideas effectively and engaging an audience, especially in a professional setting. Initially, I struggled with confidence when speaking in public, which often hindered my ability to express my thoughts convincingly. However, participating in the various course activities, especially the numerous presentation opportunities, helped boost my confidence. Not only learning theory in class in the "Business presentation" class, the lecturer taught how to develop, planning, enhancing, completing and delivering a presentation but also through practice and her feedback (especially during the presentation). recently) helped me hone my ability to structure presentations coherently, present ideas clearly, and actively engage the audience. Overcoming the obstacle of self-doubt requires constant practice, using visualization techniques and cultivating a positive mindset. With persistence and dedication, I gradually cultivated confidence, which helped me communicate my ideas fluently and create meaningful connections with my audience. As a result, I improved my presentation skills but also improved my overall effectiveness III. Strengths and Weaknesses Drawing from my assessment, I've discerned both strengths and areas for improvement in my business communication prowess. Noteworthy strengths encompass consistently garnering positive feedback on presentations, exemplifying active listening by actively engaging in discussions, and exhibiting enhanced confidence in articulating ideas, as evidenced by my impactful contributions that foster collaboration and dialogue. These strengths underscore my capacity to effectively communicate and connect with others, laying a solid foundation for success in various professional endeavors. However, recognizing the importance of continual growth, I am committed to addressing areas of improvement to further refine my communication skills and maximize my potential as a proficient communicator. While I have recognized my strengths in business communication, such as receiving commendations for my presentations and demonstrating active listening, I am also aware of my weaknesses. I acknowledge that I still have weaknesses in certain areas, such as adapting my communication style to different audiences and effectively managing conflicts within teams. To address these weaknesses, I plan to further develop my interpersonal skills by seeking additional learning opportunities, such as workshops or seminars, and seeking guidance from mentors or coaches.
