Relations and

functions

MRS. JUDITH DV. MACARIO

Relations

Is a set of ordered pairs (x , y) from a set of values called domain to a second set of values called range.

Functions

Is a set of ordered pairs (x , y) such that no two ordered pairs have the same domain value (x).

Examples of Functions

  1. {(1, 4), (2, 5), (3, 6), (4, 8)}
  2. {(2, 1 ), (3, 1), (4, 1 ), (5,1)}

Kinds of relations:

One to one One to many Many to one

One to one Relation

X y a 1 b 2 c 3 d 4

Many to one Relation

X y g h 3 i j

Note :

All functions are relations

but not all relations are

functions.

Tell whether the

following is an

example of a

function or not.
